I have an oil leak and it looks as though the car is leaking from the sump or bottom end gasket. Has anyone come across this before? AND on top of that, the car started to develop a hesitant 'jump' when on part throttle, and fully putting the boot in does always clear it, its as though the car is only firing on 3/4 cylinders. My leads/plugs are fairly new, Magnicors, good plugs etc, any ideas what it may be? The car idles smoothly.

IMRC failure maybe? But check the air filter, spark plug gaps and MAF sensor first.

She's a mk1, so she has vacuum operated secondaries. I will check the MAF. The spark plug gap should be fine, as they were the correct plugs for the car, and were installed, and havent been touched since!

So you think it's leaking between the bottom end and block? You sure it's not from another place? I guess get some RTV after cleaning the block to see if it will help.

Some have had problems with the vacuum operated secondaries. Might want to check the hoses for that. In addition, spark plugs which are pre-gapped might not necessarily be gapped correctly. And the gaps change with "spirited" driving.
Edit.
Gaps

I did the Motorvac cleaning last April so the system should still be clean.
I Replaced the whole stock intake and had to regap the plugs. Spark and wires tested okay and I didn't find any visible vacum leaks.
Only #6 was still at proper gap. The rest were anything from .58 to.62
I checked these 4 months ago so I'm shocked that they can get that far out of gap in a short period....

Todras, I will take a pic of it to show the leak, but its pretty messy. I am pretty sure its leaking at the block alright. Tony, thanks I will check the secondaries for any cracked hoses, and check the plug gaps. I have to confess to some spirited driving before she started running poor...

If you've got a huge mess under there, you might try cleaning it up the best you can and see where the new oil stains are coming from. You might take some carb cleaner and some shop rags and whipe as much oil residue off of where you think the oil leak is coming from. That should confirm your notion of where the leak has started.
