I'm having the "blower motor won't work at any speed" (we could write a book with Ralph Nader...UnBlown at any speed) problem, and trying to remove the maxi-fuse from the underhood power dist box.
How the heck do I get these things out? Special tool? It looks like I've got to unscrew something from below? or is there something I'm missing. Chilton says nothing about how to do this...

hi there, I didn't see if you have a v6 or 4cyl.
the maxi fuse on the v6 is located behind and just below the coil pack. It should be red with a black thick wire on each side. The fuse is inexpensive, just takes a liitle work to remove the pack and reach down in there. Good luck!! P.S. If your looking to remove a fuse from the power dist box, there are a few in there that should generally not be messed with unless you have the special tools needed ( so i've been told ). I believe that those are very sensitive and are high amperage fuses.

Hey, haven't been in there to look at those things myself, but here is a tidbit from the Ford Factory TSB on wire harness replacement:
"9. Release the maxi fuse assembly retaining tabs, then slide the maxi fuses out from the bottom of the relay box. See Figure 9."
The figure isn't that much help but shows where the tabs are located on the box.
Search for the 99M03 wire harness recall on this site and you can download a PDF with all the instructions to check out the figure, this step is on page 18 and 19.
Good luck, PANGLOSS

Actually, the Ford CD calls it the Maxi fuse.

Hey...no...it's one of the three big fuses that are located in the engine compartment fuse box. There are three of them and the owners manual says, "Don't mess with these...pay lot's of $$$ at your Ford dealer to have them do something". Ok...it really wasn't worded like that...but that's effectively what it said.
I guess I got the name "maxi" from the Chiltons manual, where it's refferred to as that. Anyway, one of them is a 60 amp fuse for the abs system (which I don't have) and the blower motor. It looks ok, so I haven't gotten crazy with it, but nothing else in the system is wrong...that I can see...
I hve the reocurring dream where I just keep taking more and more pieces off my little red car until ... I put it all back together and find there was nothing wrong in the first place...

Ford Uses the term "Maxi Fuse" also to refer to these three fuses inside the power distribution box. Here's an image from a file I found a few mintues ago that shows this...and also explains how to get the darn thing out!
