I can be come to a complete stop, and then my car literally goes off on its own at a slow rate of acceleration. This is not idling, as I've had it accelerate to 45 MPH or so. Also, if I get up to speed, there is a strange hesitation of the car to actually slow down from that speed. The throttle doesn't *seem to be sticking, as the motion is smooth... Now, my cruise control cable is VERY VERY frayed, and is hanging by one thread. I disconnected it last night from the throttle body, and it's STILL accelerating on its own? What the heck is wrong? The only thing I've done to my car lately is properly clean and oil my K&N : (

MTX or ATX. Slipping clutch maybe? Get on a back road Go about 10-15mph, and put it in fifth. Hammer the gas, and see if the revs rise at all, without the car accelerating. If they do then your clutch is starting to slip.

Also read this post on throttle rise.

Todd, sounds like he has an ATX. I used to have that issue whenever it was cold a few years ago. I think mine was due to a dirty TB. But in his case, your link sounds like the fix for him.

We'll need a little more information here, but I'd first start with checking your throttle cables, especially if your Cruise cable was frayed.

What year Contour do you have?
What type of Engine/Transmission?
Do you have Traction Control?

There is a TSB out for the early Contours with Traction Control. My throttle cable frayed and would stick on my 95 with TC.

Does your car rev high from an idle, or is it a sticking throttle cable issue? When mine would stick, I could come to a stop, and it would still be reving around 4000 RPM.

check to see if your accelerator cable fitting is in the bracket properly. this is the same bracket that the cruise cable fitting is attached to under the hood.

I don't think I have traction control...
It's a 2000 V6 w/the automatic. Throttle cable seemed fine. I'm going to go open the hood and re-inspect everything, and report back. I'm also reading the other post to determine if that is the case.

*update* I checked the throttle cable, it seems fine. Someone on another board said that he had a cougar that exhibited similar problems, and it was the throttle position sensor that was messed up. SOund right?

Could be. I had a similar issue and it was attributed to a dirty throttle body (TB). Maybe a TB cleaning will help yours.

Isn't it carbeurator cleaner (spray) that is used to clean the TB?

Also, how do I clean the MAF sensor? Might that have something to do with this?

Thanks. I'll post back later this evening if all of the above does not fix it.
