Hello, I'm new here...been an admirer of the CSVT for quite a while, and a lurker for the last couple days.
I am a car nut first and foremost, and I really like to fab what I'm capable of doing myself and really trying stuff I'm not capable of either (with supervision of course).
I'm considering getting a CSVT or some variation of the Mondeo platform soon, but I would really like to learn before I drop coin on something new.
I know the Contour is FWD, and the Jag X-Type is (or can be) AWD. I used the search feature and turned up a couple posts about swapping it--and how it won't work or at least work without major headaches.
I checked out the X-Type b/c I'm interested in AWD even though I don't necessarily have the money or the need for it.
With that said, what differences are there besides cosmetic and suspension tuning between the Jag and the CSVT?
I've already found the SHO site and ADC as well...and I'm not sure if I would want all motor power or if boosted is the drug of choice due to a tight engine space.
Besides the normal n00b stuff, is there anything I should look for in particular BEFORE I make the purchase? Oh and I don't know if it makes a difference, but I prefer rowing the gears to a slushbox any day of the week.:D

Check the synchros in the tranny (grinding on high speed shifts...)
SVTC's require premium.
Oil quantities in the 6-6.5qt range are HIGHLY recommended to protect from inherent problems of oiling.
Avoiding right handed sweepers, or high rpm turns (cloverleaf onramps, etc) are also recommended to avoid oiling issues, and spun bearings.
Waterpump failure on 98's.
Other than that... your typical whiny bits. (finicky coolant sensor requires more than "MAX" leel of coolant, etc)
As it stands, you can't get an SVT with an Auto (unless a prior member swapped it, but that is RARE)
Thanks for utilizing the search feature!!! You have no idea how happy that makes me.

Don't get a 2000 or late model year 99 unless you like working on fuel pumps.

if you must have awd then just get the x type to begin with as converting would be a huge massive unbelievable pita

I'm not dead set on the X-Type...especially after I checked out prices and hit up consumerreports.org. They rate the Contour high, but the X is terrible. Besides, I can always get one later and take off the blasted Jag parts that break, and build up a monster then Any other insight? I'm not hearing anything deterring yet. Also, I was checking out SHOShop, and they have some A-arm reinforcements for the 98-99...but it says 2000 they changed. What differences are there, and are the 2000 arms better? I guess what I'm trying to find with this post is, what are some things that a n00b wouldn't think to ask that someone who already has the car would know. Things like the fuel pump listed earlier, etc. Thanks, Eric

One mechanic to another... get a 2000 SVT i'm not just saying it because i have one. they got most of the bugs worked out by 2000 i have seen more 98 and 99 then 00. i have noticed though reguardless of which one you get, if it was ran hard and abused you'll or someone will have to replace the engine due to a droped valve and or a thrown rod. i know i had to replace mine and countless others. also i noticed with the Duratec whines and mones in the winter/cold. as for putting AWD it wouldnt be as tough as people would make it out to be. mainly it depends on the engine and trany set up. the 2.5 is a FWD engine reason being there are pulleys on both sides. i dont know enough about the x-type engine and tranny set up to say it can of cant be done. if the AWD is setup off a transaxle setup then it can be done. example my other car a 92 Mitsu. 3000GT comes with 2 options FWD Naturally Asp. or AWD TT. they used the FWD mounting but they added (with a differnt trany but same mounting) an AWD trany. i can as a couple fellows how its set up but the most you have to do is suspension mods. wow thats a lot isnt it

Welcome to the best Contour site going! A thought I had was, if the mileage is rather high, be skeptical of the clutch. People who buy CSVT's don't usually buy them to drive like grandma. It's an expensive repair from what I've gathered from posts here. Also, the front wheel bearings seem to be a weak link. If you drive one and hear any moaning from the front, it's likely the wheel bearings. Can be modreately expensive to fix as they're pressed in and not that easy to change unless you have a press. 151.00 per side (already pre-pressed NEW hub w/bearing) plus 30 minutes to yank and swap, each. That's the MOST it will cost. If you go the "press a new bearing in to an old hub" way, its bearing cost(60?) plus one hour of labor. to press it.
