Are the spun bearings occuring to the crank bearings (between the block/girdle and the crank), or the rod bearings (between the rods/caps and the crank)? Since people keep refering to them as the "main" bearings, I guess that I am simply looking for a definition of "main". Thanks!

FYI, "mains" are the crank bearings between the block and crank.

The mains aren't the ones spinning, it's the rod bearings. Usually the one or two cylinders towards the back end of the crank, away from the oil pump. Use the rod bearings for the V8 SHO for better wear and spin resistance... $85 per rod from Bill Jenkins, quite a discount from $111 per rod list price.

So you have the prices - have you put them into your 3.0?

Also, for install, what all is involved? It can't be as easy as dropping the oil pan and swapping in some new bearings can it?

I've got the prices, but I don't have the cash to buy them. It wouldn't make sense to pay $550 for bearings and not do a total engine rebuild or at least freshening at the same time. You "could" change the rod bearings by pulling the Y-pipe and pan, but not recommended to do so.

On teardowns I've seen instances of both, mains and rod (big end) bearings spun.

That's weird... When mine spun, it was the rear most rod bearing that spun, the second to last one was "cooked". The mains looked brand new with no scuffs or marks on them... confused

Mine was exactly like Brads. Spun the second to last rod bearing on the back end - away from the oil pump. No real problems on the main crank bearings, but I didn't look at those too hard.
