You know they are usually pretty worn at 80k. Time to tear your front end apart again. It's not too hard to do them. Mike and I have done a few. You have the "expensive style" like me too.

Well I have an update on mine of note. The mechanic was able to get the old tie rod (not machined) off with a chain wrench. The NEW (16 inch wheel) tie rod from Ford, IS MACHINED!!! so a regular tie rod wrench works to reinstall it.

based on the price you said, and the problem you're having i'd say it was the tie rod end...which just has a lock washer to remove and then threads off the inner tie rod. Relatively easy to change, but it could be frozen on which is a major pita.

Have you chaned the inner tie rods? Any special tools required?

The inner tie rods are sold separately from the rack so I guess it is possible to change them. Question is, do you have to remove the rack? Removing the rack is a big job. I also noticed only two kinds of inner tie rods, 14" and 15". I guess the SVT with 16" wheels would use the 15" ones.

the inner toe rod is basically just a rod...any clunking you're hearing is 99.999% caused by the tie rod end, which screws onto the inner rod and is very easy to change.

I dunno what's entailed in changing the inner.
