Just wanted to add this to the debate. There has been some confusion especially about the early models, '95-'98, on whether the engines are free running or interference. Gates Manufacturers (timing belt kits) has an interesting download. PDF HereThe charts list all contour and mystique engines as non-interference.

Fixed. What/where was the debate? I've always had the understanding that the Duratec is an intereference engine and the Zetec is not.

Hence the reason the Zetec has a timing belt, and the Duratec a chain.
No debate, here.

it has been gone over a few time in the zetec forums, some have reported valve damage while others have not when the timing belt has broken, the majority of people feel the it is a non-interference engine
also i thought the duratec used chains because timing is more presice, and that is what you would need for a high reving V6

I thought the Duratec had chains for longevity. Chains SHOULD (not always the case though) require less or no maintenance over the life of the engine. That was one of Fords selling points when the Duratec first came out. It's also why Dodge claims they put a chain instead of a belt on their 4.7 V8. In reality though I think I like a belt with a service interval better.

With the ZETEC, provided you have not replaced the stock cams with performance cams, they have built-in-clearance (as some good-ole'boys would say)or are non-interference engines. Some guys on the FOCUS web pages who don't work on their own cars, have had some mechanics tell them that they had valve damage in order to charge them unreal amounts for work not done.

When we hit 70k on my duratec my wife took it to get the oil changed and tires rotated. They told her that she was going to need the timing belt changed asap. She didn't know what to do cause I was in the Desert of 29 Palms and she couldn't get a hold of me. They quoted her almost 1k to do this. I am glad she thought about and called my dad with a little research he found out that the duratecs have chains and he told the shop where to stick and talked to owner and got her a free oil change.
Anyone in Socal avoid the express tire in Oceanside.

Its possible that the chains have more than one feasible use, including longevity of the part, and protection of the engine (intererence)
That's all I can think of.

Actually a non-interference motor can become interference if the clearance is already a very minimal amount. In my girlfriend's Mazda 626 for instance, the 4-cylinder has such a small clearance that if the belt snaps and there is lots of build-up inside the cylinders, valve damage can happen. This is coming from a Mazda tech so I assume it is correct. The lesson of course is to keep your motor clean.
