Is this a sender problem or a wiring problem? My fuel gauge is completely useless right now. It will show 1/8 of a tank when I have over 2/3 of a tank of gas. It reads off the scale low when I'm below 1/2 tank.

I'm planning on upgrading to a Walboro pumps when I put my turbo on. I'm just wondering what else I need to replace/fix to get accurate fuel level readings.

Thanks,
Ben

I believe it is the shape of the tank that gives misreadings...

LOL! No, it used to work just fine. There is definitely something wrong with it.

Thanks though.

Sounds like you need to replace the level sender. Usally if they start to fail they fail on the low end so you don't run out of fuel. It should be easy to replace but you probably just cant by the sender and will have to buy a whole fuel module.

Fuel sending unit is a whole other than replacing the pump. Sounds like it may be the float arm contacts. Try pulling the unit when you start your project and check the contact on the arm itself, it rubs against a contact board to send the right ohm signal for full and empty readings. May just be dirty from the filter sock needing a cleaning.

This rocks! In my big box of parts, I found a shiny new sending unit. Now all I need is the Walboro fuel pump.

It'll be a couple of weeks, but I'll let you know if swapping out the unit fixes it.

I'm pretty sure that it was the sender. My old one had TONS of play in it. When I had it out of the tank and hooked up to a ohmmeter, it would jump out of range quite a bit. That makes sense why it was always reading low. The higher the resistance, the lower the guage reads. Now that the new one is in, it is dead on.

For reference I am now getting the following readings with my new sender:

Full=22.3 Ohms
Empty=147.15 Ohms

I'll let it run through a couple tanks of gas and give everyone an update.

BTW, I wonder if someone like Bill Jenkins can hook us up with just the sending unit.
