Back when, after I had replaced water pump then head gasket, I had my codes scanned at Autozone and was told bank one, sensor 2 indicated lean. CEL has been on eversince, so today, while at Autozone, I asked to have it scanned. Her scanner had only one code on it which was P0171. Now I don't believe that is what the code was months ago, as then it specified bank one sensor 2.

My milage is running between 25.5 and 27.5. This seems to very more due to the driving that was done on last tank. Part of the varience might be due to less than exact (actual) gallons used. Generally 2 tanks will come in at 27.5 for each one at 25.5.

I am not noticing any missin in the firing. Only 2 symptons that are noticable is an idle the fluctuates perhaps 200rpms at about 2-3 second intervals. Second symptom, kind of hard to explain, but it's most noticable at highway or other crusing speed. What it feels like is at about the same 2-3 second intervals, the engine surges. Something like giving it just a bit of acceleration on the pedal, then back off slightly. Not agradual change, but like instant slight bit of additional power, then same time frame of slightly less power. Seems close to the rythem that the idle fluctuates.

Any thoughts welcomed and apprecitated.
Thanks in advance,
Dale

Check for Vacuum leak (hissing sound). Could be a hose broke or came off.

Edit. From TSB. Do the cheap and easy ones first.

P0171 - System Too Lean (Bank 1) The Adaptive Fuel Strategy continuously monitors fuel delivery hardware. The code is set when the adaptive fuel tables reach a rich calibrated limit.
Fuel System:
· Contaminated fuel injectors
· Low fuel pressure or running out of fuel (fuel pump, filter, fuel supply line restrictions)
· Vapor recovery system (VMV)
Induction System:
· MAF contamination
· Air leaks between the MAF and throttle body
· Vacuum leaks
· PCV system concern
· Improperly seated engine oil dipstick
EGR System:
· Leaking gasket
· Stuck EGR valve
· Leaking diaphragm or EVR
Base Engine:
· Exhaust leaks before or near the HO2S
· Secondary air concern
Powertrain Control System:
· PCM concern

Thanks Tony.

Thanks Tony.

Remove the words "Bank 1" from my previous post for a 2.0 Zetec.
