Yeah you guys weren't lying when you mention 'differential killing wheelhop'... I have 98 contour svt, and I was just wondering if anyone knows if the trans are the same for the svt and non-svt cars? There is a tsb about this problem which lists an updated part number for the transmission, and its supposed to have hardened differential gears in it, the the differential didnt break, it just broke the case, and it feels kinda wierd if you accelerate through turns but anyway...

Anyone know if the 'new' design is actually worth 1400 bucks or should I just get a used trans? or should I just have the crack welded in the old one lmao... I put 2000 miles on it since all the fluid leaked out, and it still shifts ok, but somethign has to be busted inside.

And is this feasable to do in my own garage or do you really have to have all the sub frame aligment stuff?

Thanks

Welcome. There was a post recently on using JB Weld for a cracked tranny.

Edit. Here it is.

Ahh yes, saw that post, but I was being sarcastic as there is internal damage to the trans - ever so often there is a clickity-clunk-bang noise, then its fine for a few miles lol. And since it has to have happened when i was doing a huge burnout with lots a wheelhop (NO more huge burnouts in this thing... I guess thats what the mustang is for =P) the place where the crack is is more than likely flexing, which means the jb weld will just crack too. Besides its inevitably just gonna fly apart...

I have heard many different stories form many people that say the trans is the same, some people say the svt has different gear and differential ratios.... thats why I was wondering if anyone knew anythign about the updated part number for the manual transmision.

LOL. Maybe Mr. Barman needs to stop pouring drinks for me. Can't help you on the part number.

All of the 98 and newer V6 manual transmissons are interchangable.

well its broken and needs to be replaced, dont see the problem in just screwing it up even more. same exact thing happened to mine (well not really, a piece of the dif shot out the tranny ) and i was able to drive it fine. in fact i should have just driven it to the shop instead of towing it (but i couldnt be sure it would make it).

edit: just put a low mile tranny in it from another tour (98 or later i believe) and be sure you put in an LSD if only because you dont want this to happen again.

I have No problem with screwing it up, I just have a problem with walking when you get away from home & it screws up!

Thanks guys, by LSD do you mean limited-slip differential?

I probably wouldn't have drove it so much, but they were always short trips and my other vehicle (90 mustang gt) is a little embarassing to drive since i recently hit a deer and it has no hood, busted windshield, missing headlights and such...

Off topic - what mpg do you guys get for gas milage from your svt's? mine seems to get 25 mpg no matter how you drive it... doesnt make sense to me. My mustang gets 16 if you beat it, and 27 if you take it easy on it, so im surprised i can't get more milage out of the tour. Or less for that matter... lol

Yes thats what i mean by LSD. Quaife and Torsen make them for our trannys, there is a post in the transaxle forum about a good deal on torsen right now. Its best to do now while you are going to have the tranny out of the car anways.

for gas mileage... make sure you have all your proper maitanence done (clean the UIM and LIM, spark plugs, filter, crap like that [UIM = upper intake manifold, LIM= Lower intake manifold] you can find how-to's on the main site, under how-to) Also be sure to shift before your secondaries open (shift before 3.5 to be sure).

hope that helps.

edit: check this thread about svt MPG:

note rays post.
