depends I guess

I had a sun that the lead wire broke that went to the voice coil, I removed the paper center in the cone and repaired it with some wire, didn't last a great long time and I had to do it again but it did work

You can have the sub reconed. basically they reinstall the VC, cone and put a new surround on it, Generally speaking it's not always cost effective, but if you had a HT using older drivers and one popped, reconing is nice option to have.

There may be a place local to you that can get the driver reconed. I was quoted $60 to recone my Clarion Pro Audio X2 a while back. I was all for it until they informed me they would be replacing the shiny purple cone with a black paper one.

Was that X2 originally a paper cone? I don't see how they can recone with just any cone and have it sound good. The T/S parameters are gonna be all off.

Yep, it was a paper cone, just painted metallic purple. But the X2 was a pretty sub, reconing it black would have made it pointless as it wasn't the best performing sub available.
