I don't usually push my own brand of giving on others or even advertise it much, but HFH really does a lot of good work and they WILL be instrumental in re-building many of the areas that were completely wrecked by Katrina.

I've worked with them over the years and donate my time to them when I can; you get to help people out, meet great people and you can even learn a thing or two about carpentry and home repair.

If donating money isn't your thing and you live nearby, consider spending a day or two doing some good 'ol fashioned work to help out in the near future.

I'll certainly be an advocate for HFH.. I've done my fair share while active duty and it works. It strengthens communities, and provides a service that can't be purchased or aquired (due to monetary reasons, or time contraints)


Its a great day... you learn.. you make friends, and you see the person you are helping cry because they don't have to lay on top of their child to protect them from the wind/rain the next night!

I actually signed up for my first Habitat build last year after reading one of JaTo's posts and can vouch that it was a very good experience. I've been on two builds now and will do it again in the future when I can, even though I found the local builds I was on were a bit disorganized with random volunteers.

HFH usually has a couple of contrator/professional construction volunteers at each build that try to coordinate things; sometimes they don't or they don't show and in that case things can get a little lop-sided in terms of who's doing what.

In most cases though, they stay pretty organized. Volunteer work of that kind certainly isn't the most coordinated of efforts, but any assistance no matter how small or large is greatly appreciated.

Even if one has ZERO skills, there's is always cleanup work and basic fetching/hauling that one can do; you certainly don't have to be a master plumber/electrician/roofer to take part in this.

Enough "soap-box preaching" on my part; I simply thought I would share.

HFH is by far one of my favorite "charities." They do great things for people in need.
