Before anyone starts flaming...I have tried searching for everything and anything to do with CAT and found NOTHING that can answer my question. So, with that said, here's my question... Would removing my main CAT with a straight pipe increase performance?, and if so, by how much?
I believe my CAT is failing, as I have black smoke coming fron the exhaust when I stomp on the gass and the peformance of the car has decreased. I read in an Import mag that they removed the CAT for a straight pipe on a Eclipse GS-T and it gave an increase of 27.1Hp on the Dyno!!! WOW!, now I know that the appilcation is totaly different as it's a turbo and mine's not obviously. But it got me wondering.
I know this is totaly illegal to do also, but what the hell. I just got smogged and have a replacement CAT that I can put on next year etc, Will it be that much louder without the CAT? (I also have the Res removed with a straight pipe) and what about smell or smoke increase?
ANY help on this topic would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

So does anybody know the penalty of not running with a cat. I know here in California they are really strict but is it a huge fine or what?

Well in FL its a $500 fine and a 1st or 2nd degree misdemeanor charge. Plus, mechanics can be fined $2,500 for removing your cat illegally, so u might have a hard time finding a shop that will do it for ya. So if California is more strict....i personally wouldnt risk it just to gain a few horses. Just buy a performance hi-flow CAT if you want the OEM one gone.

OUCH! I think I might give it a miss and just put on the CATCO I just bought to replace it then. Does anyone know if welding is involved or can it be a straight bolt on application? It is the exact size as my OEM one, 2" IN/OUT's.

On a modified talon if they removed the first cat (in the downpipe) they could see 20HP. This of course means the installing a 2.5 or 3" mandrel downpipe. Speeding exhaust velocity away from the turbo will drastically reduce turbo lag and significantly jump HP.
Also I could see them gaining 10HP from cat removal as a large straight through exhaust is very benefitial on a turbo charged (or any forced induction) engine.
On this engine. I'd say a few peak HP and the car will get a little tinny sounding at startup. Goes away when the pipes warm up.

he got caught in a check-point on a local cruise strip. they heard him coming and asked him to pull off the road and drive up a ramp and well...they saw that all 4 cats were missing. he was just running 2 two chamber flowmasters.
