Hi I am contiplating the removal of the cats on my 96 contour duratec. I am thinking about removing them and running straight pipe all the way down. I have heard it before on another contour and it sounds good, loud though of course. What I am wondering is what do I have to worry about, mechanically, if I do this. Example: check engine light, back firing. etc... Has anyone tried this?

You have 3 cats. If you gut the precats, you'll need MIL eliminators to avoid a check engine light on the downstream O2's. The main cat can be replaced with straight pipe and you won't need any MIL eliminators.

Negligable power gains to be had from doing this. Your money is better spent elsewhere.

The concern is the E-Test that some provinces might have. You should check with the Alberta E-Test standards (if Alberta has, before doing this mod).

Alberta does not have any emissions tests on vehicles to date. I think I will only remove the main cat only. Would the sound get really loud with this procedure? Thank you for your input guys.
I am looking for sound only not any particular power gains.
Thanks

The sound quality gets sharper & harsher when you remove a converter.

I have a magnaflow resonator that I am going to put in place of the stock one that I think will help out with the sound a little bit. Also, yes when I do remove it we will talk.

You have to worry about melting the bumper on the car behind you in traffic while burning the driver's eyes and the RCMP.
