ok my brakes do not light up when the brake peddle is pushed. i did check the fuse and its fine. the bulbs are both good and light up when the turn signal goes on and when the alarm is set. and the thing that i dont get is that the third brake light works fine and goes on when the brake is pushed. is there something that i am missing here. im thinking its one of the wires that is not getting power but where are these wires gonna be and how do i fix it. Anyone?

I remember this EXACT symptom set occuring not even three months ago..

it was, indeed, a fuse, and it was a fuse that wasn't expected.

I have no cd, or books with me (out of town) but you could search.. I responded to the post with the correct fuse number. Of the top of my head I wanna say it was fuse 20-something (though which one, or if I am off, I don't know).

The BOO switch is out, since your third brake works.

Have you tried VERIFYING that the bulbs are good? There is a seperate element for the turn signals, so turn signal operation doesn't cut itt. Simply looking at it doesn't work either. a bulb can be bad and the filament still intact.


I would use a voltmeter to measure voltage at the brake light harness while the brakes are pressed.

you have voltage, its the bulbs. If you don't, then work from there.

both brake lights work and are still good. is there a connection point somewhere along the line cuz im thinkn it could be loose. the fuse is also good. so im guessing that its going to be somewhere along the line of a connection point

Sounds like it could be a MFS on the steering column, too..

is there something else that it could be besides the mfs in the steering colum. and were exactly in the steering colum is the mfs? cuz im willing to go out there now and try it.

I had this same problem on my '96 mistake, just wanted to say thanks to everyone that put in their input!

But while I was reading the threads no one followed up that I could fine, so wanted to kinda follow up

I had this problem for months, inspection due this month so finally decided I should take care of it . It was diag'ed eariler by the dealer when it was in for something else, they told me the MFS shorted out / burned, so that and a relay needed to be replaced, wanted a bit over $300 to fix it.

I bought a used MFS from a JY for $65 but that still didnt work (thought it was the MFS, based on what I read here and what the dealer told me and you could see on one of the male connections on the MFS, it had burnt looking marks all around it) I dont remember who it was, but in one of these "brake light" threads someone posted a pic of the MFS with an arrow pointing to the wire that went into the connector. Well that got me thinking and I looked inside that connector (the smaller connector, there are 2 that hook to the MFS) and there were 4 female type connections, well 2 of them were to far apart to make connection to the male connection on the MFS when it was plugged in. So I just took something small and pushed the female connections back together and after that I had all 3 brake lights working again
