When is it a good idea to upgrade to an aftermarket ignition? I have the chance to pick up a DIS 6 but I'm not sure I need it.

I think I am the only person with one here. I have the MSD DIS-4 Ignition module. It works pretty well because it was designed for our cars and similar cars. It will work on the I4 and the V6. Being fully programable is great because you can play with your boost and retard timing to manipulate your powerband. Not only that but it's got a 2 stage rev limiter setup for drag racing, which works great. I installed mine with the help of a friend. If you like to swear and yell this is the job for you. If not i would strongly recommend taking it to a shop. and having it done. May cost a little more but it would be worth your time and money.

Mark (WorldTour) also has one.

Now I have a question. Does the MSD DIS-4 works almost the same as programmable fuel management system?

Yeah, I got some bolt-ons.

Ok I'll try to answer what I can.

I picked up the MSD box at SP Motorsports for around $325. For more information on how it works and how to install go to www.msdignition.com. They have full instructions and write ups but you have to have Adobe Acrobat Reader to view them.

Unfortunately the fuel system is still under the control of the PCM. However I would recommend getting an aftermarket tach. My stock tach was messed up a little after I hooked up the box. Cool part is MSD can sell a tach adapter. Although when you install the wiring harness it comes with a bypass plug so you can use your stock ignition or the MSD.

As for installation....Get a professional to do it or someone who knows wiring. My friend and I spent all day wiring my box up and it was a swearing festival. But if you choose to DIY get a friend whos got some experience with engines to help. Above all else: TAKE YOUR TIME!

Now it does have a security feature. It is a small wire that goes to a switch hooked to the chasis. If the box is hooked up and the car turned off, flip the switch and power is cut to the ignition. the car cannot be started. Pretty cool in my book.

Sorry about the length of this post but if anyone else has any questions please feel free to ask.

I don't know a whole lot about ignitions so excuse the silly question!

What do you gain from doing this? HP, gas mileage? What components do we have in our ignition? Can we change the coil? this product seems to just be a bit more than the average person needs!

I read somewhere that the OBD-II ignition is way more advanced than most anything in the aftermarket, and therefore its a waste of money! What do you guys think?

James, thank for answering the other questions.

Thanks,
Justin
