Hi all - noob here, Bought my '96 GL new and now have 83,000 miles on it. Few complaints except...I am now looking at putting my fourth set of tires on this car (I have the 15" tires). Every 20,000 miles I have had to put new tires on, with the last two being Firestone Affinity tires. They had previously worn evenly across the tire and been rotated about two times while on. Each time Firestone couldn't explain why, except to say that something was wrong and give me a warranty price on the new tires. This time just the front tires have worn, the back ones are good. I am not a mechanic and try not to pretend to be one but something must be wrong, right? Dave

yes, something does sounds wrong. assuming that u dont take turns extra hard or drive in that manor, sounds like somethings out of allignment. look into getting the car alligned after u get the new tires.

In my opinion, the main thing that would point to a problem is the wear pattern of the tires. Since you stated that all 4 tires wore evenly, then the car is obviously aligned correctly. If the tires were cupped or feathered on the inside or outsides edges, then you would definately have alignment problems.
The 205/60-15 tires are more a performance oriented tire size so I don't think that we are going to get 80,000 miles out of a new set of tires.
I have the same size on my 95 Contour SE and recently purchased 4 used BF Goodrich Touring T/A tires for $127.00 mounted and balanced. I was going to buy new Michelin XGT tires from Sam's Club, but decided against it after reading reviews about the tire on TireRack. It didn't make sense to me to spend over $430.00 on four tires that would only last 25,000 miles at the most.
Michelin makes a Radial X tire in our size that has an 80,000 warranty, but I didn't want to spend $500.00 for them.
It's hard to find a new tire for our car that has a Tire Wear Rating over 600 and is reasonable to buy.

If they wore evenly, then everything is fine. I have gotten less than 20k out of 80k warranty tires before because we have a lot of tar and chip roads, and a lot of twisty roads. The warranty ratings are also very optimistic. 20k sounds reasonable, just keep buying warranty tires if you feel you're not paying too much.

1: Treadware ratings are completely independant, based on brand, and aren't directly comparable between brands.
2: 600!!!!!

Welcome. Something is very wrong. A "regular" Contour should have its tires last at least until 10K before the warranty mileage (unless you are drag racer ). You must rotate every 5K. In addition, you did not say if it was worned evenly on previous times. If your Contour is out of alignment or struts, springs or bearings are broken, then the tires will wear faster or unevenly.
