To check to see if you ex is flowing. Put your hand over the muffler. Just do it after the car has cooled down. The muffler can get hot after driving. You should feel some pressure.

The cat will get red if it is plugged up ESPECIALLY if you go out and try to drive the car hard. A plugged cat will make the car smell and won't have any power for takeoff or going up hills. If the cat is plugged, there will be close to nothing coming out of the exhaust. You should be able to feel it push against your hand. Run a code reader on the car and it should tell you what is wrong with the car. Dropping money all over the place without trying to fix what the ECU thinks is wrong is a waste of money. Most of the time the Code that has been tripped may not be the culprit, but another device or system attached to that one that is causing the issue. In this case, maybe the cat, or another emissions related problem. If you have dissassembled anything on the engine recently, check there for any problems - loose wires, bad gasket seals, broken sensors etc. Don't just start replacing things - it's a great way to waste money and possibly cause new problems.
