I thought that I would try by posting here first before posting in the troubleshooting forum. First off the mods are a Capaldi Racing 4.5 final drive, Fidanza Flywheel, SPEC Stage III and Quiafe LSD.
Pretty much from the time that I had this equipment installed (about 2 yrs ago or so)the car made more noises. Here is a description of the noises. The typical SPEC clutch noises related to the release bearing. When I have the engine running, car stationary, in neutral, foot off the clutch there is a "rattling type noise" that disappears as soon as I put my foot in the clutch. Considering some of the talk on these boards about trouble with SPEC clutch klits and the release bearings I know that the next time i get the engine pulled I will get a new release bearing.
Now for some of the annoying noises.. when I am driving along in gear and I am applying throttle (a little or a lot) I hear a noise that sounds similar to gear whine. From outside of the car the sound is more like a metal on metal contact noise. As soon I let off the gas completely the noise completely disappears and as soon as i get back on teh gas it is back. Now one strange thing about this is that when I let off the gas the "whine like" noise sounds like it "slows to a stop" as opposed to coming on or disappearing abruptly.
I figure that this noise is related to the clutch, flywheel, final drive ring, or axles but for the life of me I cannot rationalize what about those components would make noise only when I am on the throttle. At this time the noise is more noticeable in higher gears (4th or 5th).
even with all of this noise I have been to three track events this year and three events last year and nothing failed?!?!?(which is a good thing.)
Due to the extreme cost of pulling an engine I have put off getting this checked so any help would be great.
Thx
Fern

I would bet that the gear whine would be a result of the Capaldi 4.5 final drive. I'm thinking that the higher gear multiplication of that drive would amplify any whine that might be there. Might also be an installation issue with the Quaife...maybe shim related.

Agreed, it sounds like final drive whine. One way to reduce it is to put in some additives maybe even fully synthetic tranny fluid, that is if you already didn't do that.

Chris I already use Synthetic for the tranny.
BTW if it is the final drive then why would it only happen when I am on the gas and not when coasting in gear?
Also if you read my original post the sound from within the car sounds like a "whine" but from outside it sounds more like a metal on metal contact? Also when i let off the gas why does it sound like the noise is a "spinning type noise that is slowing down". Doesn't the FD spin all of the time when you are moving and not only when you are on the throttle? I am not challenging anybody / anything I am just trying to understand the mechanics of what might be causing the noise.
Thx for the input so far.

I would think there is a certian amount of load put on the gear when you are on the throttle. When you let off it would rest in a slightly different position therby making a different noise or no noise at all. This is just mental speculation though.

I wonder if the Capaldi drive has more straight-cut gears than the stocker, which would also increase the whine.

As Mark said, you load up one side of the gear mating surfaces, then when you let off, unloads. It is a natural thing for gears to whine as they wear, ever hear a muscle car with big drag radials and a high ratio rear diff? They whine like a mutha.

I don't know much about muscle cars, but my cousin's '91 Porsche 968 and his '82 911 all have the "Gear Whine" under any load. I think that it has to do with the less luxury/street oriented parts and how they are made... but don't ask me, I'm not a mechanic.

I had the same noise with the org stock clutch and with a 90's mustang. In both these situations, it was the springs in the clutch disk that had become loose enough to rattle in their housing. Once that was replaced the noise disappared.

This does sound a lot like tranny whine. Exagerated by the final drive which if a race component, likely has square/straight cut gears. First thing i would do is check the level of fluid. Even if it's topped up how long has it been since a change and what did you use last time? Either go with the dex3 and ford additive or redline or royal purple synth.
With all the autocrossing you do you would be best served changing that tranny fluid far more often as most of the time, you're in the top of 2nd, pushing hard. That's gotta heat up the tranny a lot more than normal, which would also degrade the fluid more rapidly.
Good luck to ya fern. I hope it's something simple and not major parts.
Regards,
John
