i was wandering what the best method of stripping paint from the front bumper of the contour would be.
it has ugly spider cracks spreading already from the nice cautious tow trucks and a friend said he would re paint it for me if i strip it first.
so how would i go about stripping the paint and primer???

You can either use a chemical paint stripper that is safe for plastic, because there are some paint strippers for metal that will eat right through plastic.

Otherwise,I'd say a rough grit sandpaper and a power sander and go at 'er,and then smooth it out so it's nice and ready fo paint. Whatever process you use,it'll be labour and time consuming.

somone else probably has some better suggestions though.

Right now I am using a product from Walmart called "Bulldog Flexible Bumper Paint Stripper" for my body kit project. It gets the majority of the paint off pretty fast except for a few spots. I'd give that a try or pretty much any flexible paint stripper. Like SleeperTour said, get the wrong stuff, buy a new bumper. Thats my $.02

If your buddy is going to repaint the bumper for you, I would just worry about getting the paint off of your bumper. Don't really worry about finish sanding it as your painter freind will most likely want to get the surface to smooth out with a few coats of primer and some light sanding in between. I would use 80-100 grit to sand off the paint. The chemical bumper strippers out there are for stripping Urethane bumpers, the bumpers on the Contour/Mystiques are made of ABS plastic. Urethane swells when the stripper gets on(goes away after the stripper is removed) versus the plastic that starts to melt and fall apart (gets really brittle too) . Sanding as long as you don't dig into the plastic alot is the safe way to go. You might want to sand a little heavy where the spider cracks are just to remove them from the plastic otherwise they WILL come back through your new paint after it dries.
