So the SVTC's in the shop, it had been grinding while coasting and then started thumping, so I took it in and got a rental (again). They called today and said it's the transmission; I have an extended warranty that obviously covers this, but...

Manual tranmissions aren't supposed to die at less than 70K miles. My clutch assembly exploded around 30K, and Ford's warranty didn't cover it because it was obvious the first owner (I bought the car at 9K) had beaten the hell out of it.

Do you guys think this could end up being a similar story, or does the MTX-75 have this problem a lot? I'm not sure if this belongs in the Transaxle section or not, so I'll just put it in General... Mods can move as appropiate.

I think you answered your own question. I have a 2000 SVT and 161,000 (driver enthusiast) miles on it and it shifts like a top. I am on my third clutch however. The first clutch lasted till about 93,000 miles (hard miles) and clutch lining was worn out. I replaced the clutch again at 152,000 miles. The slave cylinder went bad.

Dont get me started on how stupid it is to put the slave cylinder inside a transmission for a relatively low hp production car especially when it is very easy to put the Zetec MX-75 slave cylinder (which is weaker) into a Duratec MX-75 transmission. This is why my second clutch did last as long as my first one. The lining still had at least 50% of a new clutch. Since it is such a PITA to remove the slave might as well change everything out. Sorry for the rant but the mechanically the MX-75 will last a long time.

well, my thoughts are this, if the originally owner did indeed rape the tranny then it accelerated the wear inside the transmission and it caught up to you.

Yep. I could destroy a tranny in 1k miles if I wanted to. It's all about how things are treated. Same with anything in life.

Your best argument is that abuse before you bought the car was a factor it should have shown up a looooong time ago.
