2. 97-98 Mercury Mountaineer 4x4 v8
3. 96-98 Jeep grand cherokee 4x4 6 or 8
4. 95-97 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 v8 (about 145k on clock)
5. 97 Dodge Ram 1500 sport 4x2 5.2L v8
6. maybe 97 Range Rover 4x4 v8 (more like 140k on clock)
7. or maybe 95 Range Rover 4x4 v8 (95k on clock)
opinions, comments, suggestions (looking UP to $5-6k at most)...

3, 4, or 6 are my picks for reliability... My friend had an old Jeep Cherokee, drove it till it had 260K miles on it... When he gave it back to his parents, they decided it was such a good car... they would drove another engine into it and give it to his brother... He drove it for a year and they sold it for like $400. Still runs today... Rusted to [censored], but still runs.

The 5.2L (318) Grand Cherokees have leaky water pumps... Dunno about the 5.9L ones (wouldn't mind getting one of those, though...)

My 92 Cherokee 4.0 I6 has 180k on the clock, a bad connecting rod, and a shotty transfer case and it still gets me to work and back every day. All city miles. I bought it from a friends parents for $500. That was before it started falling apart though.
When I finally shoot the rod through the block I think I'm going to replace the engine. I love the thing too much to get rid of it. Its the most trusty beater Ive ever had.

as far as i know, pathfinders never came with a V8. tahoes are by far the most reliable on that list imo (not counting the nissan but only a V6--i have a V6 Trooper and pulling a boat with with that kind of power is not easy task) range rovers are badass off-roading vehicles and luxurious but have some of the worst reliability money can buy. that's why theyre so affordable used.

I've vote for #1 or #3. Tahoes/Yukons tend to be quite reliable, and if anything does go wrong, most problems are easy to fix.
The Grand Cherokee doesn't have quite as good of a reputation. However my dad has owned a '94 and '98, both of which had the I-6 and over 100k miles. The '94 had a badly cracked exhaust manifold (apparently a common problem) and the '98 had a bad alternator, but otherwise both were very reliable.
