Don't pump the pedal anymore. Our Contours (Mystiques) are fuel injected vehicles. If you pump the pedal, it sends a message to the computer that the car is flooded, and the computer in turn shuts off all fuel. If it won't start when you crank it pumping the pedal won't help.
Edit. Per owners manual, V6, at temp greater than 10 degrees F, if the engine does not start in 5 secs on first try, wait 10 seconds so you do not flood the engine, then try again.

Thanks for the link up to the manual. Hopefully, I can get to the botton of this problem before something worse shows up. (Glad I have a couple days off. This is going to take awhile.)

What I recommend is that you check your wires leading from the firewall on the passenger side. There will be a set of wires that leads to your PCM. Check these insulation on these wires, is the insulation brittle or falling off? Also check the wires over by the battery and the fuse box next to the battery - is the insulation falling off and or brittle? If so, you will probably need to replace your engine wiring harness. There is a service bulletin about this. If you do have insulation falling off or brittle, see if the wires are wet. If they are I would use a hair dryer to carefully kinda dry them out and then see if your car starts....
There is a splash shield kit for your year car that keeps water from splashing up on damper and belt, etc. If you hear a slipping sound when you drive through puddles, etc. you will need this kit.

And you're laugh at this...Apparently it was the oil! It got into the spark plugs, which were overdue for a changeover anyway, and screwed up the works. (Course, the puddles also were a factor.) Anyhow, the plugs have been replaced, the oil's been drained to a safe level (and believe me, guys, I've dodged a major bullet here.), and things are running smoothly now. It cost some cash, but what auto repair doesn't. Within a couple days, I'll get a proper oil change and this little episode will be behind me.
Thanks for all the help, guys. I'll be back from time to time to ask for some tips and all. Again, thanks.

You know, that the V6 engine would take a HELL of alot to be "overfilled"..
The manual calls for 5.8, but running 6, or 6.5 is FINE and ADVISED... it avoids low oil pressure on sweeping right hand turns (the KILLER of this engine)
To drain it to "safe levels" would be..... what level?
