After 71,000 miles my sunroof went belly up. When I took it apart I expected to find the typical stripped plastic gear but instead the black plastic cover that provides bearing support for the plastic gear had shattered. The gear itself, looks surprisingly good.

Two questions:

1. Anybody know why the cover disintegrated? I've read a lot of posts on failed sunroofs and never saw one with this problem.

2. Anybody have a cover from a bad motor they'd sell me?

Thanks for any replies

Welcome to CEG!

I just yesterday bought a motor assembly from a '97 at the U-Pull-It in Sherwood for a whopping 10 bucks. I haven't tested it yet, as I want to lubricate the moonroof tracks first. I saw some post a few days ago about someone theorizing that lack of lubrication is what causes the gears to strip out (when that is the problem.) My gear is stripped out, but unfortunately my cover is also cracked, otherwise I could give it to you. Anyway, you might try some of the junkyards locally if you haven't yet. As of a couple of weeks ago, the Damascus U-Pull-It did not have any Contours/Mystiques with moonroofs. As of yesterday, there were no more factory moonroofs at Sherwood. I'm not sure of the status of any other yards. Good luck!

Stop by the NW Forum and say hi! Also, someone in the NW area may have an extra cover that you could pick up, but they might not see the post here.

Thanks for the welcome Marty,

I did check a few junkyards this weekend including Damascus and Bob's Used Ford in Gresham. Sunroof parts seem to be pretty rare, You lucked out. Upon closer inspection of my gear I found a quarter inch chunk missing which explains the busted cover. I'm sure when the gear lost some teeth the motor got out of time and jacked the gears resulting in the shattered cover. Anyway it's toast.

I have the same problem with my 98 SVT sunroof. If you come across another or know where to find one, let me know. The Ford Stealership obviously will only replace the whole sunfroof in upwards of $300, so I refuse to have a sunroof until I can find one of these!!! Someone help please!
