In case you where wondering what it costs to bore/balance these blocks, I just got my block back from the shop 2 weeks ago:
- 99 Taurus Block (60K miles, $585 shipped. I bought this block around 2 years ago) - Clevite Rod & Main Bearings - Pauter Rods - Diamond Racing Pistons (9.0:1) - All Studs/Bolts for 01+ Windage Tray/Oil Pickup
Services rendered:
- Give the block a "bath" - Remove the transmission bearing/collar - Bore the cylinders to accept the pistons - Fit the pistons/rings/rods/bearings - Balance rotating assembly
Cost: $980.77

Correct, Puck- Considering Trevor and I had our shortblocks assembled at the same shop. $980.77 only included the Clevite main & rod bearings- All other parts were supplied. That was mostly labor.

I can supply a cost breakdown when I get home ... the work order/receipt is on my workbench in the garage.

So expensive when I look at it. I did all my own work on my hybrid and the machine shop work I did have done including new valve seats and machining came to less than $400. There was no block work since the block was low miles so that would add to it but I'd think having it 'tanked' for a good cleaning and have it "mic'd" for cylinder taper and wear wouldn't be much more than another $100 if no additional work was needed. You can easily install the rods and mains yourself. The mains don't need changed ANYWAY! Unless you are repairing a damage crank. Change the rod bearings of course but those are easy.

Forged internals = more reciprocating mass = needs to be balanced = majority of cost over what you have stated = not really that expensive considering the work being done.

We handed the engine shop our blocks, parts and asked if they could get the bearings and they said yes ... we did not supply the bearings.
