I am... and here is what I see:
You are suggesting to take a "regular" 2.5 (as in non-svt?) which is a step DOWN... not advised.. if you meant a "standard" SVT version of the 2.5, then we'll go with that, since I would imagine nobody in their right mind would pay to have something that is less than they used to have.
new SVT 2.5 - $2800 IF YOU'RE LUCKY.
labor - 8-12 hours? maybe more? $70.00 or more per hour... so $560 at 8 hours, or $840.00 at 12 hours.
Misc. items for the install would be about the same regardless of engine used, so that would be irrelevant, I would say.
So.. we are looking at a minimum of 3300-3700, and that's only if you can get the new engine for the 2800 I stated. (Look forward to spending 3200.00 instead..)
BY CONTRAST:
01+ 3L, as low as $450.00 or so. (since I gave a lowball offer on the svt engine) labor will be the same allocated time, or thereabout, and even if you go to an "expensive performance shop", lets say.. $100.00 an hour? that's $1200.00 in labor.. you're still barely pushing 1700.00 or so.
Even if you threw in the "what about a used SVT engine?" thought, then you'd likely get the same price as the used 3L, and why would you pay the same amount to go through oil starvation, and less hp (GOBS less torque)??
Advising someone with a blown 2.5 (SVT or NOT) to replace it with a stock motor would only be adviseable (at least by me) if you HAD another stock motor (thereby eliminating the cost) or had a SERIOUS hookup, and an affinity for shooting at lower goals.

I think the problem is you seem to think that cutting off two pieces of block, removing/cutting/grinding off a bushing on the crank, egr modifications, fuel rail modifications, Splicing/tapping for the knock sensor, splicing in an injector harness, custom chip, and we wont even touch on dyno tune, or any machining (i.e. split intake to oval head) will only be an incidental expense; then Im moving to your world because its drastically different than anywhere Ive been.
Lets go through the available options shall we?
Used Full SVT 2.5 Good luck finding it. IF you do, prepare to pay a significant premium. You would be looking at $1500 Min for such a piece (Remember shes in Canada BIG difference) This would certainly be the easiest way to get the car going again, period. On top of the outrageous cost of this used engine, you would still be looking at another $750-1000 in labour to drop it in there. Total est costs $2500
ANY 3L is going to be the cheapest as far as the actual core component. But looking for a 01+ 3L, (escape) prices in this area range from $2395.00 down to $1000.00. Using a Taurus donor, will allow the price to drop to $850, but increase the labour necessary; To a point that the slightly cheaper engine is offset by the cost of prepping it for service in a contour. So to break this down: 1000 ââ?¬â?? engine Complete modifications required ââ?¬â?? atleast 1000 Labour to drop it in ââ?¬â?? 1000 Total ââ?¬â?? at least 3K ââ?¬â?? WITHOUT TUNNING!!!
Std 2.5 Short block
$500.00 for complete engine (less if you can find a good short block) $400.00 swap over SVT goddies (MAX inc TTY items) $750 ââ?¬â?? 1000 labour Total - $1900 max
Other than minor piston changes in later cars show me the difference between this and the SVT unit. This is where your (and others on the board) logic leaves me confused. Not everyone is looking for the last ft-lb of torque or every ounce of HP. MANY ppl who LOVE their car just want it back on the road again the cheapest way possible. What Ive outlined are rough prices which could swing either way, but the point remains.. IF YOU ARE NOT DOING THE SWAP OR HAVE AN ARRANGEMENT WITH SOMEONE CAPABLE OF DOING THIS KIND OF WORK, A 3.0L TRANSPLANT MY NOT BE FOR YOU UNLESS COST IS NOT A PREDETERMINING FACTOR.
Sometimes, people just want to drive their car again.

Thank-you John, you've hit the nail on the head.
If I don't drive my SVT anymore does that mean I have to take my framed Certificate of Authenticity of my wall?
This might be a faux pas but does anyone have any opinions on the Dodge Avenger ES? Any chance the engine out of it would be suitable for my car? It is a 2.5L OHC V6.

Well thank you Chick.
There are ways to get you moving again. Don't worry.
As far as the Avenger. Nope. Not in a million years. Dodge Avenger, Ford Contor. Completely different engines.
Oh, and shhh about the authenticity... there are some who my start a campaign to burn you at the stake for uttering such a thing. I'll keep it a secret tho.
