okay, I haven't been here for while I hate to tell you the reason I am here today. My engine blew in my 98 Contour SVT. I am being told my connector rod broke causing all kinds of damage to the inside of my motor. I have been given 2 options. Re-build or drop a new motor in. There is an SVT dealership close to me in Canada that apparently sells crate motors. I would really appreciate any advice anybody has. I am afraid to let my mechanic start ripping it apart if my best option is to go brand new. I haven't researched my options as well as I could have, as of yet. I would like some sound advice first to see what my next step should be. There is definately damage to the heads and that's all I know. It was making a ticking sound and my mechanic took it for a run and said not to worry, it was just my heat shield. So I didn't worry but when the sound got louder I realized I had a major problem. It died while I was on the highway and won't re-start along with making some terrible crunching and grinding noises. I love my SVT how can I make her better again?

Your smartest/ cheapest route would be to find someone (who knows what they are doing) to do a 3L for you. Unless you still have some kind of warranty?

My car has 170,000 km's on it which I am almost positive voids my warranty. I believe I only had till 110,000km. Do you mean a new 3L SVT enigne? I have a 2.5 right now. Is this an easy transition?

Look around in here, I'm sure most of your questions about the 3L will be answered. This is SAID to be the best alternative.

Where in Ontario are you?
There are a few of us over in the eastern canada forum. There are several ways for you to go, but i'm afraid that modding or 3L conversions are prob not for you, unless you happen to have a mechanic in the family who owes you a favour. Make that a BIG favour.
pm me and i can put you in touch with some local wreckers and get an idea of what kinda of money you're talking about.
Good Luck

Why would a 3L be any less of the way to go?
a new SVT crate is $3000+!!!!! plus installation and shipping. A low mileage/new 3l can be had for $400!!!!!!
MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper to go 3L, and you get SO much more bang out of the deal.
If you have to replace an enginge either way, WHY CHOOSE to pay MORE for LESS?

Ray, I hate to disagree, but if you are not the one actually doing the install, or have a good friend doing it for/with you, good luck finding a traditional shop to do the swap.
This is not something you can go to your local mechanic and say... 'I want this engine in that car.'
I agree with you otherwise tho, as in it is the best way to move forward in this circumstance, IF you're capable of performing the modifications required. Im not so certain this is the case here.
Otherwise, to have this done and done correctly, you're talking about a performance oriented shop and we all know how inexpensive their labour rates are.
Now if she were to take a regular 2.5 short block, its a direct bolt up and just about any shop can do the work.
You do the math.

I am... and here is what I see:
You are suggesting to take a "regular" 2.5 (as in non-svt?) which is a step DOWN... not advised.. if you meant a "standard" SVT version of the 2.5, then we'll go with that, since I would imagine nobody in their right mind would pay to have something that is less than they used to have.
new SVT 2.5 - $2800 IF YOU'RE LUCKY.
labor - 8-12 hours? maybe more? $70.00 or more per hour... so $560 at 8 hours, or $840.00 at 12 hours.
Misc. items for the install would be about the same regardless of engine used, so that would be irrelevant, I would say.
So.. we are looking at a minimum of 3300-3700, and that's only if you can get the new engine for the 2800 I stated. (Look forward to spending 3200.00 instead..)
BY CONTRAST:
01+ 3L, as low as $450.00 or so. (since I gave a lowball offer on the svt engine) labor will be the same allocated time, or thereabout, and even if you go to an "expensive performance shop", lets say.. $100.00 an hour? that's $1200.00 in labor.. you're still barely pushing 1700.00 or so.
Even if you threw in the "what about a used SVT engine?" thought, then you'd likely get the same price as the used 3L, and why would you pay the same amount to go through oil starvation, and less hp (GOBS less torque)??
Advising someone with a blown 2.5 (SVT or NOT) to replace it with a stock motor would only be adviseable (at least by me) if you HAD another stock motor (thereby eliminating the cost) or had a SERIOUS hookup, and an affinity for shooting at lower goals.

I believe he was refering to the SVT and NON-SVT haveing the same shortblock. So you get the block and install the SVT heads, intake, exhaust ect. and end up with the same product. Which might turn out relatively cheap.
But I would personally go for the 3L......

All of you are right to some degree. I have spent 2 days researching my options and this is what I've come up with. A 2.5L OHC FQR (Ford Quality(hahaha) Reman.) motor has been quoted to me anywhere from $5000 - $6500/CANADIAN DOLLARS. The installation is looking somewhere around 20 hours. Even with my "Friend" rate it will be $70/hr compared to $85. The absolute cheapest cost I can find for the whole shabang is around $6400. Now, I love my Contour but I'm really not sure if I can sink this kind of money into her.
The 3L option had me quite excited but as stated earlier the labour costs to install this "custom" engine are horrific. I also can't even find anybody in my area that will even TALK to me about it!!
Now, I have been looking at these Crate Motor Website's they seem to have all kinds of engine's available for my car priced 1 to 2 thousand dollars cheaper. There's freight and returning my old engine which will probably put me back to where I started.
I am very frustrated and if I had a money tree in my backyard I wouldn't think twice about my options. 3L all the way baby. Last night I took a DODGE Avenger ES for a ride, it also has a 2.5L OHC V6. It's automatic that's what sucks. My original idea was possibly using this engine for my SVT but I don't want to get into a money pit and as far as I'm concerned any USED engine is dangerous, it's got 110,000kms on it. Maybe I'll just have to store my SVT and drive the Avenger?
Damn I'm gonna miss her!!!
