In your linked reference, nobody brought up that it could be a vacuum problem (green vacuum hose on top of the EGR could be cracked, split, or removed, etc..) though it would likely cause a lean condition code for the downstreams as well. I have seen it cause a 0401 without anything else, though.

That's why we have experienced moderators as a catch all for insufficient diagnosis. Thanks.

There's no reason to be lost while you have a resource like CEG. What did you not understand, or need help with? I'll cover a little more, and you let me know if there is still something missing..

The EGR is a UFO shaped device (silver) on the top of the UIM.. the UIM is the upper most part of your engine, and visible from the engine bay. The EGR will be mounted to the driver's most side of the UIM, and will be held to the UIM via two bolts.

There is a green vacuum tube with a small "L" shaped elbow in it (rubber boot on the end) and it attaches to the top of the EGR. A likely cause for the EGR code is that your little green tube either cracked, split, or came off the nipple on top of the EGR. Visually assure that the tube is still in good condition, and connected, then go from there.

After proper evaluation, try the following:
  • purchase an EGR gasket and a Throttle Body (TB) gasket from ford
  • remove either:
    the battery cables
    OR
fuses 4 (20A green, bottom passenger side) and 11 (3A pink, top passenger side) for the duration of this project
  • Remove the EGR. (Two bolts) and clean out the carbon crap that will be inside there. replace with the new gasket in there.
  • remove the TB (four nuts on each corner of the TB.. will make it easier if you remove the air intake tubing, to give more room...) and look for the passageway that comes in from the EGR side (small half circle cut-out pathway, like a ditch) running from the firewall(where the EGR is...) side. There may be carbon crap in there, too.
  • replace the TB with the gasket and replace the intake tubing...
replace whichever power source you removed (cables or fuses) and restart the car.

See if your code comes back. Likely not, but if it does, don't jump on replacing the EGR (it RARELY fails..) look at either a bad vacuum tube (even if you think its good) or a faulty DPFE (under the EGR, black plastic box with two hoses, and four screws holding it in...) replace the DPFE before the EGR.

I don't forsee you needing to do this, but let us know either way (if it works great for you, or whatever, just follow up!!!)
