I have a full tank of gas and i just replaced my fuel filter. When i try to "push" my car... at around 4000 rpms my car starts to putter. Its the running out of gas feel, but i have a full tank. Does anyone know whats goin on.

Could be bad gas. Maybe the fuel filter is on backwards. Slightly clogged injectors....try some seafoam in the gas tank and see if that works.

Did it start right after you swapped the filter? I'd imagine the filter is on wrong if that's definetly when it started.

Double check the filter orientation. FREE

Check to make sure your secondaries are opening. FREE (unless you have to replace the IMRC)

Test your fuel pressure. Kinda a hastle, potential new fuel pump.

How many miles on your car??

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

In the FAX section, find the instructions on changing the fuel pump on returnless systems. Find the very last photo on the page and click on it and study the disc shapped filter on the bottom of the fuel pump module.

Follow the instructions and remove the pump. Remove that filter and throw it as far as you can and put the car back together without the filter. You don't need it, there is a conventional sock filter further inside the pump module.

Actually, before you put it back together, confirm that the fuel tank is clean (no evidence of massive contamination).

The disc filter is too small or too fine or both. Ford recalled some Cougars and Foci (Focuses?) for the same problem but didn't see fit to go back and include the returnless fuel system Contours.

Do the return style contours have the disc fuel filter? (the one that gets dicarded afterwards)

No. The fuel pump module is very different.
