Coming in late... I think getting the authorities involved is a no-brainer, and if your boss fires you because of it... make his head spin by how much money you'll sue out of his cheapskate posterior.
If he bought the computer used... you completely wipe the hard drive before bringing it into service... I do it myself on my computer from time to time to clean it.

UPDATE: I messed up big time on this whole thing. I reported it to my buddy in the PD. As of now, nothing can be done even though I have a copy of the hard drive. The police need the actual computer, but unfortunately, the computer was picked up before I talked to him. He said a copy of the hard drive is no good because there is no actual proof it's his hard drive. They would of needed to grab the computer. I will soon be passing this along to the FBI to see if someone up there can do something. If not, his *ss is grass the next time he comes into the store, and I have a little feeling he will be coming back.

I know this feeling well... Working for Xerox for almost 6 years, I came across alot of weird crap behind copiers and on copiers. I have some pretty funny stories, but that is besides the point.
But I will say this... Remember the Chinese guy that leaked the nuke secrets to his nationals back home? It was a Xerox tech that found the missing hard drive inside the backside of a 265 copier that made the difference. The tech found the drive inside the machine and handed it over, to officals, with rubbing gloves on.
Point is... There is a protical that is covered by all good technicians and it is call, "C-Ya!" Cover Your ---!

Coming in late, but these things burn me up...Local PD does not have the jurisdiction, nor usually the resources, in these matters. Internet child porn is under the jurisdiction of the FBI and the US Attorney. Local FBI should be in you phone book, and here is a link for the US Attorney in Connecticut... here
I commend you for your concern in this matter. Child porn and sexual assaults against children often go hand in hand. You would be doing the right thing in pursuing this.

I wouldn't feel too bad. You made an effort, and as a result the cops know and the FBI will too. Only a matter of time now.

I think if you had to post this on the internet for advice...then you didn't make enough of an effort. I would've handed that over to the police first and foremost.

Didn't mess anything up, I just didn't fix it 100% like I was asked. He wanted Windows to be formatted and reinstalled, but I didn't do that. I just cleaned Windows up to make it run better, but that can only last so long.

Of course. For all the cops know, maybe the guy didn't pay his repair bill so you threw some kiddie porn on a hard drive and claimed it was his. It's a very serious allegation, so the cops are going to want to verify that it is indeed on his computer.
If I were you I'd call the guy and offer something enticing but plausible to get him to come back (half off a memory upgrade, something like that). Then have the cops waiting when he brings the computer in.

OK am I the only one who thinks this guy is an idiot for not calling the police as soon as he found the child porn on the PC? Why try to play mister detective when all you need to do is call the police right away. Now he will probably get away with it and keep looking at the child porn. Good work there super sleuth!
