I want to use a dial indicator to insure i am at TDC on cylinder 1 to time the engine correctly what do I need to buy for the stem to be long enough to reach down far enough into the cylinder

You need a long stem traveling indicator.

I used a dowel and did it by eye on my Dodge Lancer 2.2, it was fine. The Contour engine may be fussier...

I've never used a dial indicator for this. Usually I can use a long skinny screwdriver.

There are special tools for this though. This is one I found with a Google search using "TDC Tool". This one happens to be for a motorcycle engine, but that shouldn't matter as long as you have the correct spark plug thread. It is about half way down the page on the right hand side.
