-Nuggs Umm... That's news to me. I know of someone experimenting with a turbo on a Duratec, and has also lost a main bearing, but it was not because of the turbo. It was because of the UDP wasn't doing a good enough job as a harmonic balancer. You just need to keep the bearings oiled and use a proper harmonic balancer. They should be fine. Hang out here for a little while and see what's going on. We have knowledgable people here, too.

I'm up for a turbo kit, but seriously though, anything more than $2000-$2500 for a turbo, exhaust manifolds, BOV and intake/discharge pipes is a rip off. I don't care who made it. When I upgraded the turbo on my GSX Eclipse, I paid $450 for a brand new 16G from Turbonetics (which I ported myself). A good 1st gen. Eclipse BOV cost me $120 and the upper intercooler pipe was another $100. So lets say we add another $150 for a well designed intake pipe to connect the filter and MAF to the turbo we are still at $820 not counting the exhaust manifolds. Now the SHM Headers cost what $1000? so something of the same complexity would be needed to run the pipes to the battery location to mount a turbo. So $1820; now add an braided oil feed line $50, and drain line $50 and various miniscule components we are looking at $2k and change for a basic turbo kit. Getting a chip to run it right is another $250 and an FPR and/or larger pump would cost another $300. So for $2500 we are looking at realistic price for good performance. If only I had someone willing to make an exhaust manifold for me I think that I could make something work for the same money or less. What do you think Chris, am I talking out of my ass?

So what type of exhaust manifold would you like?, a 'y' pipe type for a single or two 3-cylinder types (l/h r/h) for a twin setup, 600 series Austenitic s/steel ,fabricated or cast ! I have some prints if the crew are genuinly interested(was a Benteler for some years too!)

Anastazi, Most turbo attempts you might have seen or heard place the turbo above the tranny. This is not the case in this kit. I understand the need for a cost to gauge interest. The manufacturer really wants to have all the kits with intercoolers, and I have to agree. That water/air intercooler will be placed where the battery is/above the tranny. I don't want to give too much information about the kit because it WILL give away the manufacturer. And neither they nor I want a load of people calling them to get a status on the Contour/Cougar kit. If you know who it might be, please refrain from calling them. Please rely on me to communicate any information to the group. I promise I will do my best to relay what is going on. Terry, I will be in contact with you about the details to get your insight to this. I believe you know quite a bit about this engine As far as pricing, one needs to consider the components that come with the kit. The turbo that will be used in the kit is a little more technologically advanced and more powerful that a 16G. I can promise you will get what you pay for and the components and engineering that goes into the kit will be first class. I have enough interest from the NECO group and some members of the CEG right now to get the ball rolling. If all goes well, my car will be up on the rack late September for a massive HP addition. I just hope things go as well as Robert King's SVT with the Vortech kit.

I would be interested in a turbo kit. I wouldn't have the money though until Dec.-Jan. time frame.
I would like to get some more info if the bearing problem is true.
I just need some prices concerning stages 3-5.
Thanks Jason
Let us know what you would consider a reasonable downpayment.

Chris, I realise that using an VATN turbo (I think I know who the manufacturer is now ) will be miles ahead of your standard off the shelf turbo. Kudos to the manufacturer, as that turbo removes the need for a wastegate and definitely reduces turbo lag (something most people complain about, but really wouldn't know what it is!) which is no worse than waiting for the secondaries to open. As for the intercooler, check out Neuspeed's turbo kit for the A3 Golf, it auses and air to air with a hood scoop. I would prefer this to water to air, as air to air is far more efficient and LIGHTER, add a wter spray ONTO the intercooler as well as ducting and you are looking at a cheaper, lighter, less complex setup.

Okay for those more knowledgeable than me, throw some ballpark numbers around. I get the impression that a Vortech will look like a bargain compared to what would have to be spent on this setup. I guess thats why they have "stages". I'm curious how much a chunk a change I would be putting down for Stages 1-3? Guesses? Estimates?

Sorry...
Turbo is the way I'd like to go, or I might still to the 3.0L NA route...
P.S. The whole turbo supercharger thing was just a joke...

Chris,
I think a turbo is a good option. Hopefully, the cost will not be too high. Any idea on hp numbers or an estimated cost?
