I hear the oxygen sensor can affect the spark plugs.

Would then (in turn) affect the spark plug wires?
Would a damaged O2 sensor affect the idling and acceleration of the vehicle?

It could. Do you have a CEL? If you do, go to Autozone or other autoparts store to have them scan it and then post it.
