Though I'm sure it's come up before, I can't say I remember it. Has anyone tried, or thought to chop a good sized whole in our hoods, create a custom airbox that both goes into the original tubing (or aftermarket, doesn't matter) and wraps completely around an open air type element, thus only receiving air from the orignal inlet and this new whole, very similar to a GM Ram ait setup. The obvious problem is willing to cut into your hood and being able to fashion a nice clean looking scoop to go over it. Maybe we could even steal the Camaro SS scoop, finding something already fabricated that would look apporpriate with our Contours contours (shameful and delibeter) would be the best way to go. Then seal soem sort of home grown plastic mounting under the hood, edge that in some dense foam or rubber, then create that air box to wrap the filter element, edge that in dense foam or rubber and bam you got a few extra cold horses... Right? Besides how BA would that look on the Tours, not to mention the sound difference, you might as well put a mic inside the intake and mount a speaker to your hood. Ever hear the difference between a Trans Am without Ram Air and a Trans Am with? Ooooh baby, big difference, I nearly wet myself when I heard that Ram Air barking out commands. Duratec's sound pretty authoritative, and having that loudspeaker to the world would sound pretty damn nice I'd bet.

Well, I don't want a scoop sticking up personally, so I'm using a NACA duct. If you're not familiar with them, viper gts's have one. I started out with one made from fiberglass, but the shop I chose to do it reproduced it out of steel to hold up better over time. [better to weld it in place than to "adhear" the glass one.] Fully functional ducting attached to underside of hood, and a "new" airbox fabbed up using stock one as mold. Only one opening, on top of air box. As I said, I'll get someone to post pics, but it will most likely be about two weeks or so. [They aren't done with it yet.]

The guy that has the hole in his drivers side fender is CAM2, and if I recall correctly he has pics somewhere, either in the pics&video forum, or the Ohio forum.

I think its a great idea but I wouldnt go ram air! I have been on the boards a long time in CEG land and have read many things about it. I can rember at least two times people saying they had custom ram air that would stall the car when in netural! Ok only two cases not so bad go for it!
My personel choice would be a hood vent and KKM, vent right over the kkm either stamped in the hood or cut and added, then simply add two slots on the under side so that a rain card can be inserted if it was a bad weather day!

I have read similar posts (probably the same ones) myself. I had posted this topic on fordmondeo.org and there a comment was made to vent the rear of the box that surrounds the air filter. Lightly meaning, not wide open, but like slatted. If you really wanted to get fancy you could even set up something that looks like a window shade, several slats of plastic/metal that could be adjusted in time with the throttle, only backwards. When the throttle was full open, the slats would be shut so the air could only come in the intake hole and go in the engine, at 1/2 throttle the slats would allow half flow out into the engine compartment, and at low throttle/idle the slats would be wide open so the air would loose any forcing affect, thus preventing the engine from being flooded with air. The rain thing would have to be dealt with too, obviously. Chris

I've been toying around with this idea for some time... The manager of a local "restyling shop" (Roman Chariot) informs me that he personally knows of "a guy" who's very good with fiberglass and sheet metal that would have no problem cutting in some hood scoops with no extra material needed... So I'm going to take these pictures to these two people (someday, perhaps once everything else with the car is all said and done) and see what happens.. I asked the forums for opinions once before and I got some (mostly) positive replies. This hood: With these scoops: The hood scoops should look something similar, since I'm going to try to get a close match to the SVT lower front bumper grille as inserts for the scoops. Once everything is 'aluminumated,' (or chromed I imagine it's going to look pretty good with the Mystique's waterfall-style grille. But that's just my imagination talking. Hopefully the real thing isn't disappointing.. One periphery question... With these hood scoops... should I expect to see lower running engine temperatures? That is, will "highway air" blowing over the exterior of the engine do much of anything to cool it? .RMk.., perpetually curious; "I can't help it!"

The hood scoops could cool the engine bay down a bit but not enough to drop the engine block temp by much. Getting cold air to the intake is the main benefit although keeping the intake area cooler in general should provide some additional benefits.
