I replaced the lower A-arms, bearings, and am in the process of reattaching the knuckle/strut assembly. Yes this is a royal pain on my 96, and I am struggling. Did the struts 3 years ago and it was a b!tch then too.

My problem now is the passenger side half shaft slipped out a bit and I can't get it back in enough to get the knuckle into position.

Is there any trick, gear, clutch position, to help get the half shaft re-engaged all the way back in? I am desperate

How funny this happened to me yesterday! Some grease, the boot, and clamp all together came loose in heart-breaking agony. Here is what you need to do... Loosen the A-Arm and tie-rod off the knuckle in order to free up some play room to the knuckle. Once that is done and with the help of a friend, move the knuckle and half shaft around until the tri-bearing slides back into the tranny shaft. You can try to get the boot on at the same time, but it might be harder doing that since it adds yet another task to the combined labor.

The best way to do this is to have one friend guide the tri-bearing into the shaft, and have another sustain and move the knuckle around. Another thing that helps is to use a floor jack to bring up the knuckle by the A-Arm mounting point, that way holding much of the weight for your friend that's holding the knuckle. This is only one of the ways to do this as the other ways require more equipment to be at your disposal, but the simplest if you are working out in your front yard... Good luck!
