95 2.5 V6, 104k miles
running poorly, bad gas mileage. studders, sounds like it's running on 5 cylinders rather than the 6 that are in there.
i've gutted the cat.
i've pulled the throttle body and cleaned the EGR passages.
i did a "suck test" on the egr, and the engine speed drops and stumbles a bit, but doesn't die completely.
getting CEL and the code is 332. (key on, engine off)
sounds like it needs a DPFE to me, but was just looking for confirmation from the resident wizards ...
any comments ?
thanks !

It should stumble severely, may need to ream out the passage in the intake between the EGR valve and throttle opening better.
At 104k you should have new OEM plug wires, replace the intake gaskets, replace the PCV valve and the hose from the crankcase baffle, and check the operation of the secondaries.
Not saying you don't need a DPFE, but first things first.

It got new plugs and wires about 10k miles ago.
When I did the plugs and wires, I had the whole intake off and cleaned everything there. Gaskets looked to be in good shape.
I haven't done anything with the PCV valve. Would problems with it cause they symptoms I have ? (poor performance, code 332)
Thanks,

The EGR code sounds like a separate problem. All my poor running was caused by vacuum leaks. The hoses are showing their age.

I've found a cracked rubber line (big crack, gaping hole) between the PCV and the intake. Replaced it, and the car is still running like crap.
I've pulled the DPFI sensor out, but I have a feeling this sensor wouldn't cause the car to run this badly. I'm still only getting a 332 code.
Any more thoughts on this ?

Did you reset the computer? (to let it "re-learn" with the new conditions). I think you pull fuses 4 and 11 for a minute or two.

Well I've found the 'running poorly' problem :
THE DAMN SECONDARIES LINKAGE IS *GONE*.
It's completely not there. Fell off or something. So the secondaries were open all the time.
Hope the dealer has one and isn't going to rape me to get it.

As expected, the ford dealer is a complete idiot and told me they'd order a part but can't be sure it's the right one, and if it's not, i'm paying for it anyway ($60.00).
<sigh>
While I'm trying to figure out what to do about the missing link, is it possible that those secondaries being open all the time could cause that 332 code ? I have the DPFI removed, but I really don't want to put another 60 bucks (for a new DPFI sensor) in this car if I don't have to.
Thanks for your thoughts.

I had the sendaries link lose the fitting that connects the pushrod from the LIM? (box on front valve cover that controls the secondaries)to the shaft that turns the secondary butterflies. My secondaries were always shut, and the car ran fine but without the extra power.
If you don't want to spend any money on it now, maybe you can just move the shaft to close the secondaries and secure it to something with a wire.

There seems to be two shaft's worth of secondaries running down the intake manifold. The first shaft is still hooked up, the 2nd shaft is the one missing the linkage and was stuck open.
Can I just tie it closed and run off the single set that's still hooked up ? I think tht might mean that only one bank of cylinders is getting operating secondaries, but I'm not positive on that.
