If it is an exhaust strap or shield loose, you could check by having someone rev it in park while you look below (don't go under the car). On the other hand, you may want to try taping or tying a cheap camcorder under and recording the undersides while driving. I have a $100 one from Target (which records for 5 minutes or so).

Don't use the $1,000 ones though (the person you borrowed it from might not appreciate it).

My '98 CSVT now has 231,000 miles, with no timing chain rattle. Did you listen under the hood for where the noise comes from?
I had some noise seemingly near the valve covers that turned out to be the accessory drive belt idler. Mechanic said he's seen old belts make similar noise that goes away just by replacing the belt.

231K HUH? Damn! It just sounds so much like a chain rattling that I don't want to get my hopes up that it may be easy to fix. call me a pessimist. I'm sure a timing chain job would run upwards of $1,000. If I'm looking at that much, I may as well just do a 3L swap. I'd love to just trade the damn thing in for a Mazda 3s
