Well I have gone through 4 tanks of gas now in my 99 SVT. I'm a little concerned about my city mileage. It's been unbearably hot in Chicago and the A/C has been on almost continually while driving. The city average is 16.3 mpg. Does this sound unusually low to anyone?

Thanks,
Ron

pretty low, but not incredibly low. A/C's a killer

I run the AC 100% of the time (have a newborn in the car, so its not a matter of choice) and I am pulling a continous 22.5 - 22.8 or so, even with AC on. (this is 90/10 city driving..)

I would SERIOUSLY consider doing a UIM/LIM rebuild, and checking/changing your plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, etc.

I have a 98 SVT. I drive 50 miles round trip a day. 48 of the 50 are interstate. 79k on the car and I was getting 21.5 mpg w/ the original plugs, wires, fuel filter and the CEL on for a bad O2. Changed all of that and added a K&N to the factory box and now I am getting 21.2 mpg. I thought I would get a little better. And this w/ the A/C on or off.

definitely needs some maintenance. Suggest performing the UIM/LIM rebuild, along with some injector cleaner in the tank.

if you drive 99% freeway you should be pushing 28 to high 29's.

Well a zetec 4 cylinder would give you at least 33 mpg.
Gas is just going to go higher, maybe the 4 cylinder is ultimately the better car. The Contour was never ment to be a hotrod. But it works just fine as a commuter type car with the 4 cylinder. And I would think less stress on the drive train with less HP.

I have an ATX and it gets 20+ mpg with the AC on in traffic. Maybe the clutch is slipping a little?

My Zetec ATX with 60k miles on it would continually see 350-380km per tank. Absolutely piss poor, worse than my fuel thirsty Rotary in my old RX7. The RX7 always got about 400.

My V6 MTX gets me 520 to just over 600km to a tank depending on my driving. I do mostly highway driving, but I do find occasional city jaunts suck up the gas a little quicker. I drive with my windows down, rather than the AC on,and the deag caused by the windows down somewhat cancels out the gas consumption if I were using my AC instead.

That's what I was thinking. Just put some BG additive in the tank yesterday. I cleaned the throttle body and IAC about a week or two ago. My mileage has not changed at all. I get on the interstate and set the cruise at 80.
What do you mean by UIM/LIM rebuild? Pull it apart and clean it?
