I've had this problem for a while. I have oil coming back up through the crankcase breather hose and filter; and falls into the air filter box. Then some of it gets sucked into the air filter clogging it. I lose about a quart everytime I do an oil change, every 3000 miles. One guy told me to change the pcv valve and it should stop it. Well I've changed it and it still comes up. I'm hoping it's not something internal! Can someone help me OUT?

Most likely you have what is known as blow-by. That happens when the piston rings no longer control combustion pressure as well as it should, and some of the combustion gases blow past the rings and pressurize the crankcase.

This is usually caused by either sticking rings or by excessive ring and clyinder wear. The cure is usually to overhaul the engine.

Replacing the PCV valve was good advice. You should also make sure that the rest of the PCV system isn't plugged up. You should also check the condition of the oil (it sounds like you have).

If the rings are carboned up and sticking, sometimes you can get them functioning again with chemicals. The same stuff that is used to clean up the intake manifold will sometime help if it isn't too bad. Removing the spark plugs and squirting about a tablespoon full of something that will break up carbon will sometimes help (certain types of penetrating oil, or even auto trans fluid). The guys at www.bobistheoilguy.com have been touting an oil additive called Auto RX that cleans up sludge claiming that it can clean up ring packs.

It may be worth trying some of these things, but don't get your hopes up too high.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention. I have the 2L Zetec engine w/ auto trans. And it's a 98. Don't know if it changes anything.

oil sludge and rings carboned up can be totally prevented from happening by using a synthetic oil like mobil 1.
To understand this mobil 1 has a much higher heat point at which it will break down and carbonize. So in the ring area, standard oil simply burns up from the heat, turns to carbon and sludge and coats everything.

Make sure the PCV tube is not clogged. Try blowing thru it.
Also when the motor is running, take off the oil filler cap and see how much crankcase pressure you have. My own 98 zetec has almost no blow by. It has a very very light pressure that feels like it is pushing and pulling a little.

3k on a quart isn't bad consumption. Try a compression test. Valve seals could be worn.

Bad valve seals will not contribute the air filer filling with oil, that is, bad valve seals sill not contribute to blow-by.

I think you are right, a worn valve guide lets the oil get sucked in and burned.

Should I try seafoam? I see a lot of others are using it on theirs to clean up oil deposits on the inside.
