I asked myself the same question. I am putting in some Pioneer 6x8s in when I do my rear deck and was looking at multichannel amps, they are not cheap so I decided to stick with the 23x4 or so RMS watts out of the HU. Most put out about 25x4 or so with a peak of 50x4. Most of what I found was 30 or 40 watts and really I don't think I need to spend the extra money for not that much more power, but I will default to CEG. So CEG, will you notice a diff between amp and no amp on in door speakers in general?

My experience is that powering the speakers with any kind of external amp, even one that puts out only around 50w sounds better than running off of HU power.
If you browse around ebay or the like, you can usually find 50x2 or 50x4 amps around $50-$120.

Having too much power is far better then not enough. I run my Pioneer 6x8s with 110watts a piece. No problems. I know that the power they are receiving is clean.

thanks for the link. I think I may buy that amp. if not that one then This Kicker one The Kicker one's only $10 more and the only reason I'm leaning more towards it is because I know of more people who have Kicker gear and have no problems with it. What do you guys think?

I run alpine stuff, with the exception of my sub amp, but that was just because I got a deal I couldn't refuse... $20 for the MTX from a friend was a steal of a deal for the amp... I've always used alpine and never had a problem with their stuff. My alpine 9807 was a display model at CC and its been fine... The Alpine amp would be more efficent due to the V-Drive. They used to offer V-drive in a few of the top-end HU's but unfortunately they dropped that this year. IIRC, the V-drive ups the voltage so you don't need as much current to run the amp. It really is pretty impressive how they do it.

oh thanks for the good word on the alpine amp... I actually do know alpine is a good name to buy from. just haven't seen as many people where I'm from with experience with it. I may try that amp. It will be a toss up for me. I'm in no rush to decide. but thank you everyone for your help on this topic for me. BTW, I have an infinity Kappa Perfect 12" sub on the way... I don't plan on putting it in right away. Think this sub will sound nice in my car?

I've got Kappa's up front on mine and a CDA-9833 HU with the V-Drive built-in amp and they're awesome. Much better sound than the Reference series I have in back. (Should have spent the extra $30 for the Kappa's to go back there too.) Unlike incubusjunkie stated on the bass many songs I've played have excellent bass. Actually had to turn off the Media Expander too lower it so it wasn't so distorted. With mounting them I was able to use two of the original mounting holes and just drilled two new ones. Use some good double sided tape for the in-line X-overs other wise in the extreme heat like here in SE N. Carolina they will come off the inside of the door any clank around in the door.

I presently have Infinity KRAPpas in my front doors. Two years ago, just out of warranty, the tweeter in the driver's door freakin' fell off! I resoldered it and epoxied it back on, and it has been on since. This year, last week to be precise, the tweeter on the other speaker fell off. Both times I was running them with an external amp, and two years ago, it was with only around a 25w/ch amp! They sounded okay, but apparently they don't know crap about adhesives. Now I'm looking for some real speakers to replace them with. Marty
