Alright my sister's 99 Cougar had a dead battery, according to the "idiot light". So I went and got a new battery and tested the old one, which came up dead. So after I replaced the battery the light never went off. Does this mean that the alternator could be shot? Its only been a few hours so the new batter is not dead, yet. If the alternator is dead, how much of a pain is it to replace?

9! BS! I'm no mechanic my a long shot no way did it take that long. 4 maybe on the long end. I don't think it's as bad as ppl say it is. The more you do it the better it is, of course. I could do it in about 1.5 to 2 hrs. now. Helps to have skinny hands!

FWIW: the "idiot light" has nothing to do with the battery. It is only a matter of "charge state"...

It ONLY measures charging voltage.

Check your megafuse if the light is always on.. located behind and below the coilpack.
Measure resistance across the two prongs.. should be nill to none. any resistance (if its busted, it will either read "INF (infinite) or in the MEGA ohms.. That is bad.

thanks for the quick replys, and help. Sadly my Dad refuses to let me try anything and now the car is on its way to the dealer, just for future reference, to get to the Megafuse, would I have actually had to take the coilpak off? I was lookin on my car and it's kind of a tight fit to get back there, just curious. Thanks so much.

Yes, you'll have to take it off. And your dad doesn't want you to save $600 by doing it yourself?! Hope he's paying. Slip off the belt, remove the 3 bolts basically. It's gettting them off in the tight area that is the [censored].

well in his defense he does not work on fords, but he is a close family friend and said he could do it. He guessed it would take 2 hrs, so that is what he charged me for that and a new alternator. When I came to get the car he said my car is why he likes working on his son's civic, lots of room in the engine bay...

Alternator should take no where near 9 hours. Hour and half tops if you know what your doing. The hard part for me was figuring the right extensions, swivel head, etc that i needed to get the bolts out. After I had it out, I had the new one back in, axle, brake, etc in about 20 mins.
