I need to replace all 4 struts on my 98 Zetec Mystique. There is a set available that came from a 96 Contour V6 (complete with springs). Would these fit? I know they are different part number, but are they physically different, or just spec is not the same. What would you recommend for replacement, and should I replace any associated parts since I am pulling them off?
Thanks!

Any suspension can be used in any year, so long as all associated parts are migrated between the pre-98/post 98 conversion.
IE pre-98 to pre-98: no problems (any part is interchageable) post-98 to post-98: no problems(same as above) pre to post, or vice versa: you have to use the perch, etc, from your donor car on to your source car.
This is covered in the faq under suspension, IIRC, and if not it is covered under the main page faq.

You'll ride high in the front with V-6 springs in a Zetec. And the struts may be nearing the end of their life, being so old (assuming they are stock). You might want to pony up and get new ones.

As much trouble as they are to replace, I wouldn't even consider installing used ones, especially if they are 10 years old.

I can now attest to the fact that their a bear to do . I just replaced my 10 yr. old, 170,000 mile struts (plus the following) and it took me 2.5 days!!!
1. all 4 struts
2. ball joints
3. rear link pins
4. brake pads
5. bleed brakes
6. fuel filter
I'm likley slower than others, but it was my first time on the Contour, so I was slowed by lack of experience. Shatzki (sp) would have changed struts for $150 which turns out to be an excellent deal.

Not so sure about that... The Zetec is iron block & likely about the same weight as the aluminum V-6.

That is likely true.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

I agree. Having gone through this two or three times now, I would gladly pay $150 for someone else to do the work. Of course, now that I no longer have to pay alimony, $150 is easier to come by than it was when I was replacing the struts myself.

I would deffinately go with brand new struts. Because if you go with used struts your going to end up having to replace them before long as well. They may be worn out already. As far as doing it yourself or paying to have them replaced, that would be personal preference. Good luck!

The Zetec tour is about 200lbs lighter, total, IIRC... Of course, this was for the entire car, so I hae no idea the engine weight.. I wanted to say I remembered 60lbs sticking in my head, but that seems way off.
