so i finally took off the rear door panels to check to make sure the wireing was still there to add speakers (the previous owner removed them). well it turns out that they cut out the metal to fit 6x9's. problem is, there is only 2 and 5/8 inches clearance between the metal and the window when it's down. 6x9's are deeper than this. i DO NOT want to modify the door panel. how have people made 6x9's fit or is my only hope to make a wooden bracket to hold a 6x8?

i don't know why they cut the door, 6x9's fit in the stock openings.

how do they fit if there isnt the clearance for the speaker magnet??? the window would hit it when rolled down

Make a panel and get 6.5's.
Generally: round speakers > oval speakers

yes and also round speakers $ > oval speakers. cant afford that. plus IF i was going to pay the money for good speakers, i would want them in the front which would then require four new speakers... sooo no. i want to spend under $100 for these speakers.

although i think that cutting for a 6x9 was useless when a 6x8 already fit. not all 6x9's are 2 deep. i suggest the new mtx 6x9's great sound quality, very shallow and quite inexspensive in fact i have all mtx all the way around and im loving it

Generally, yes, but it has nothing to do with the shape.

I've stated this a million times, and I'm far from an Audio expert - but to install 6x9's in any of the doors is BASIC!

You take the grill/cover they supply with the speakers and then put the plastic bezel (minus the actual grill piece) BEHIND the speaker. This then acts as a template for mounting the 6x9 AND as a spacer to set the speaker out from the door, so the magnet doesn't hit anything in the door. We installed 6x9 Pioneers in all four doors of two SVT's without have to cut anything. You just drill a couple new holes to suit the bolt pattern of the 6x9 vs the 6x8 and that's about it. On some speakers you need to trim the door pull reinforcement bracket on the back door as it can touch the eadge of the spreaker frame, but that's it.

Here's a set of infinity ref 6.5's for $100 at crutchfield (should be cheaper if you look around) 6.5's

and here's the ref line of 6x9's
for $20 more.
how are round speakers more expensive?
btw my boston's were $200 for 6.5's and the 6x9's were $220, same deal.
