Every time the drivers door is opened that stupid, annoying, irrating, etc dinging starts. It dings with the ignition key in or out. Is it possible to disable/murder this dang dinging? If so, how do I do it? I tried to find the chime but although I can hear where the noise is coming from can't actually see it. I wanted to unplug it and throw it away.
This is a 1998 Mystique.

Don't know if this is a related item, but can all the doors be programmed to unlock with just one click on the key fob? I do not have an owners manual for this car.

Quick and simple on both:

The door ding is only tied to the front driver's door.

Open the door, look at the switch on the column. undo the two screws, remove switch from column, remove one wire, heatshrink wrap it (or tape it, but I wouldn't recommend that) and reinstall switch. tada now the car thinks your door is always shut.

on the key fob:

stock keyless cannot be programmed as such.. aftermarket ones could though expensive to change out.

I used to have a similar problem, until I figured it was because the ignition keyhole (my best description of it)wasn't fully popping out. It's springy, and sometimes if you just wiggle it with your finger a bit, you'll hear it pop out, and the chime will stop. And I feel dirty writing this.

If your cylinder is not popping out properly, it may need lubrication. Use a proper lock cylinder lubricant, not WD40 or such other stuff.

Owner's manuals can be downloaded in .pdf format from www.fleet.ford.com (an official Ford website.)

I presume that you mean that I need to remove the plastic cover under the steering column which then gives me access to the ignition switch. Could not see the two screws but did discover that if I unplug one of the connectors under the column that the dinging stops, but then also loose power to the panel. What color and size of wire did you remove?
Think I am going dingy with this problem.
On edit, I have checked the key cylinder and it pops out OK, but lubricated it anyway. Even with it out, that darn dinging still continues. It will stop if the steering wheel lock engages.

Ray meant the column (I think it is called the B Pillar) between the front and rear door. You should see a black "rubberry" looking thing.

little black switch popped out, there..

Thanks for the help. The switch on mine is held in with one sheet metal screw and when I popped it out found only one wire going to it. The screw grounds the case of the switch.
Yup, the dang dinging stopped OK, but now my interior lights do not work, so have to look deeper for this stupid dinger.
Does anyone know if the dinger itself is a seperate unit or is it part of some circuit board?
