Okay, first thing is it's a 96 Taurus 3L OHV. But it similar to our cars and I do own a Contour and post on this site...

So my mother's 96 Taurus was throwing P0340. I pull off the cam sensor, and the sucker is totally broken. Funny thing is the car was actually running okay. I always heard that a car won't run without this sensor. Any gurus care to chime in? Thanks.

The cam sensor is for injector timing. It will run with a bad sensor but not very efficiently. Especially when the engine is changing rpm.
