What exactly does a subsonic filter do, and do i need one for two 15 L7's in a ported box powered by hifonics Brutus???

it cuts out really really low frequencies that can be harmful to the sub.

That sums it up.
My amp had a built in one...if you have one, use it cause it doesn't make sense to have your sub making sounds that low cause you can't hear them anyway and even if it is a 15' sub and can probably handle very low frequencies, it'll be easier on it.
...is this correct? Just my .02 from limited knowledge...

and the amp is working to put out those sub-sub frequencies that u wont hear so cut them to give the amp a break or allow it to focus better on amplifying what u can hear.

When a subsonic filter is used it eleminates something called "flutter". This can cause damage to your woofer. "Flutter" can cause severe excursion in your woofer, this could allow the driver to bottom out. Not a good thing. Hope this helps.

Never heard the term flutter used in this context but a subsonic filter is made to avoid having subwoofers unload below tuning in a ported enclosure. They are generally unnecessary with a sealed enclosure.
