Well, due to family stress I have decided I no longer want to work from home, so I'm planning on giving up my consultanc/business. Can anyone recommend a place to look for IT jobs ? Mostly I'm an MS Networking tech, with old-school skills in Novell. Also do security & desktop stuff too. I have a very extensive skills set and abilities. Being new to the area though, i don't have a clue where to look for this kind of work, outside of the usual newspapers & HRSDC. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated ... also if anyone knows of anything going anywhere for any wages (I'm desperate to get out of this TBH) let me know. Here's a link to a map showing where I live, near Ottawa. I'd be happy working in Ottawa, but happier in Kanata ... in case the agencies and so forth are more area specific. Thanks for help, Christian.

Yeah ... ummm ... this is the problem. I've been doing this for about 10 years but I don't have a Computer Science degree. ALso government is out as I'm not only a non-French speaker ... but I'm also a little Johnny Foreigner (Brit).
I've checked Ottawa Job Shop a number of times over the last 12 years, and must admit it's a steaming pile of poo!!
Thanks for ideas though.

It depends on the government. You may be able to score an English-speaking job IF you are not in a Regional Office or National HQ. I have seen internal postings where bilingual is preferred, but if you're uni-lingual it's okay.

Just out of curiosity, have you applied to Alcatel in Kanata ? I work for this company but in Saint John, New Brunswick. Our office is bigger there and its a great company to work for. What is it you are looking to do ? I can send your resume in for you if you like ? We get refferal fees if they contact you and hire you. PM if your interested. I know that they are alwys looking for people, but I have access to our online jobs too for ones that are posted internally. Let me know Robyn

good luck with the gov't ...I don't speak french either, and from my experience and the experience of friends/spouse in the gov't they would hire a beaver with grade 10 education, who speaks french of course (but very littleenglish) over someone with 2 degrees andyears of experience, and who can actually do thier job. I worked contract for a short time for gov't. I have 2 degrees, my boss had high school, guess what language he spoke. My friends boss at HRDC failed his english test 4 times...and they gave him a promotion, and he then promoted his boyfriend so he could sit near him...that kind of crap wouldn't last 2 seconds in private sector you can't even get in the door without being 'bilingual' ...go figure. Trust me, you are better off not looking in the gov't...the pay is better but there is so much politics, back stabbing, and then the french speaking canadians are always kniving against you just because you can't understand thier jokes... I was ready to move to T.O. to get away from this kind of crap, but I was lucky to land a job at a very english university.
anyway, networking is the best way to get jobs...good luck.

Politics is always around, no matter if you're government or private sector.
As for the pay, it can be lower than the private sector, but compare things like benefits in the equation too. Depending on the job and position, you may be ahead in terms of vacation credits carried forward or flexible working hours.
The one thing I just recalled is the Federal government I/T bunch are currently in labour talks. Who knows, some could leave and create some openings...
