As some of you know I had the paint replaced on the hood, both rear quarters and my stock spoiler. For $650 it was half assed and as previously stated, single stage paint.
It's not worth it in my opinion. You need to save some cash and purchase quality work and materials from a body shop that will paint it right.
That's just my personal take on my experience with $650 paint work.

yes if you are getting a paint job for $650 than it is going to be a VERY low quality job.....sure it will look ok after it is first done, but i GUARANTEE that it will not look good long...within a year or probably less it will orange peel...than eventually start peeling and fading.....there is a reason that the cost is so low, because you are getting poor quality work...
it doesn't matter what some of the paint jobs you saw looked after they were just done...look at them again in 6 mos. or a year and you likely won't be so impressed...
a REAL paint job is going to cost you about $2k or more....but why skimp now and settle for a halfassed job and regret it later....save up a little more and get a real paint job that will last a long time.....unless your planning on selling it in a few months....
and all this machine sand mumbo jumbo means nothing.....the car does not have to be sanded all the way to bare metal for a good paint job....actually dulled down factory paint is perfect to prime and paint over....and for quality prep work they will NOT be able to get everything smooth without hand sanding it.....

or it is a lacquer based paint
Sorry, I thought you were trying to say lacquer was single stage.
Lacquer was what revolutionized the auto painting industry.....almost 100 years ago. Before that they had brushed on paints that took days to dry and they weren't that great.

You also want to consider another thing when getting your paint done. Is the car just your daily runaround,or is it your fun car, which you like to show off with and cruise in etc? I'd say go ahead for the cheap paintjob on your daily runaround, but if you've got a nice car with lots of mods and stuff, why skimp out on the paint? Paint is the first thing people notice when they see a car. Paint makes or breaks the look. My car,in my opinion atleast, looks good,BUT,my front bumper and hood badly need to be repainted due to stone chips. I've got mods,my car is my daily driver, and my 'show' car,and when I'm at meets and shows people cringe when they see the state of the front end of my car and it makes them forget the rest of the hard work I've put into the car. Spend your money right the first time and get a quality job, instead of having to go back in 6 months to get it repainted because it peeled or faded, and paying for the same cheap job twice will be the same as paying for one good job once.

+1 I am having my Crown Vic painted at one this fall. All I pay for is the supplies. Down side is that you have no real idea how long it will take and you have to be sure the class they are teaching have the talent and drive to do a good job.

So I dont care as long as its nicely painted.
Be careful and inspect several cars from each place. Because they are franchise the quality can vary tremedously from location to location.

I would turn my garage into a paint booth and spray the damn thing myself before sending it to Mr. Schieb. It would be cheaper, and probably come out better, too.
