Had to have the timing belt both idlers and the tensioner replaced on a 1996 4 cylinder Contour. I have been told total, including a tow (only about 1 mile) is $675. Does this price of, say $625, for timing belt, etc. sound okay?...seems like a lot to me.

When i was in a wreck around a year ago towing was $475 for around 1 mile, some places charge more or less.

not at all, I think it was near $300 in parts from the dealer to replace the timing belt on my car a few years ago

I say do it yourself, 150$(maybe 200$) is parts (timing belt, waterpump(if you need one), valve cover gasket, and pulleys} and about 4 hours to spare. You could save a couple hundred dollars.
And yes, 600+ sounds like alot, I got quoted 400$ all said and done when I checked it out for mine.

Was the $400 for just the belt without tensioner and pulleys? I had a quote from dealer for $460 just for the belt.
I picked up the car and my wife had heard the message wrong...total was a little lower, $636 which included $54 for the tow.
With the tensioner and idler pulleys, the parts are $345 on my bill, then there is 3 hours labor for $207. So $552 for the job, excluding taxes.
Brapple - Since you indicated just parts were $300+, I am interpreting your "not at all" to be referring my "seems like a lot to me"...and not to my "Does this price of, say $625, for timing belt, etc. sound okay?". In other words you think the price I paid was okay.

400 was for everything, tensioner and pulleys, and belt. It's not a major garage, just a 2 man roadside place. That might make a huge difference in price, Plus, My family's known them for years.

I think my dad found it online somewhere for >$200 recently, I dunno how complicated it is, but it seems like if you could DIY as stated in previous posts, I'd rather give up a saturday rather than $400

I had my t-belt done about four months ago. My total was $450 for parts and labor including spark plugs at the dealer. Labor was 4.5hrs and the tow was $50 for 18 miles.
They did screw up my idler pulley for the serp.belt and it snapped on my way home. They did fix it for free.

My nephew is the king of replacing time belts. He is always doing that. I disagree with everybody else the price sounds like a excellent job. When replacing a time belt you should go ahead and do preventive maintance and fix everything. I think he charges in the 500-600 range. He is ase certified and works for ford garage

That's about what I paid when my kid needed her timing belt/tensioners/pullies replaced on her tour. Give or take a bit, that seems to be about the going rate to replace those parts. And, welcome to the CEG.
