My water temp gauge in my dash does not always register the coolant temp. some times it does..but most of the time not...I replaced the sensor and that did not help...i hooked up the old sensor and lit a match under it and the car reacted but the temp gauge never moved....

this is a 1998 contour w 2.0L zetec engine (129000 miles)

anyone else experience this?

I'm having the same problem. As near as I can tell the circuit is open. So I need to trace the lines back to see if one is frayed and grounding. The other thing to check is the temp gauge in the instrument panel.

there are two individual items here.

a SENSOR.. (coolant sensor, controls fans, and how the car runs..)

a SENDER simply tells the guage where to be.

a bad sender would cause this, and troubleshooting the sensor would provide no result, as you have seen.
